Mesoscale finite element modeling of recycled aggregate concrete under axial tension

Summary: The study demonstrates that mesoscale models utilizing the interface element technique are an effective approach to investigate the tensile properties of concrete. The tensile strength and elastic modulus of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) are primarily influenced by the characteristics of new and old interfacial transition zones (ITZs), the strength of old mortar, and its quantity. Moreover, it is found that the impact of incorporating recycled aggregates on the tensile properties of RAC depends on the relationship between the strength of old mortar and new mortar.
