Powder sintering and gel casting methods in making glass foam using waste glass: A review on parameters, performance, and challenges

Ayesha Siddika et al.

Summary: The use of glass foam as a high-performance alternative to conventional insulation materials is gaining popularity, but its manufacturing process is energy-consuming and non-ecofriendly. Researchers have developed new sintering methods to address this issue, but research findings on glass foam properties are scattered due to varying parameters used by researchers. Material design and sintering conditions play a crucial role in determining the performance of glass foam.

Effect of ark clam shell on crystal growth and mechanical evaluation of foam glass-ceramic derived from cullet glass waste

N. A. N. Hisham et al.

Summary: The solid-state sintering technique was used to manufacture low-cost foam glass-ceramic using ark clamshell and cullet glass waste. The composition and structure of the foam glass-ceramic were analyzed using XRD, FTIR, and FESEM. The sample with 3 wt% ACS showed the highest compressive strength and potential for use in the construction sector.

Separation of silicon carbide and silicon powders in kerf loss slurry of loose abrasive sawing by means of phase transfer separation method with mixed cationic-anionic surfactant collectors addition

Li Pang Wang et al.

Summary: This study attempted to separate SiC and Si powders in kerf loss slurry through phase transfer separation method with mixed cationic-anionic surfactant collectors addition. The results showed that mixed surfactant collectors addition could improve the separation of SiC and Si powders in kerf loss slurry at lower surfactant collector dosages, and the dosage of NaOL had a more significant effect on improving their mutual separation than that of DAA did.

Green Glass Foams from Wastes Designed for Thermal Insulation

N. P. Stochero et al.

Summary: Glass foams were successfully produced using discarded glass bottles and pine scales as pore former agents, with porosities between 78% and 86%, thermal conductivities between 0.072 and 0.093 W/mK, and compressive mechanical strengths between 0.2 and 3.4 MPa. These foams have potential for applications requiring thermal insulation and non-flammability.

Summary: Glass residues can be used as raw material to produce foam glass boards, with sodium hydroxide as an environmentally friendly foaming agent. Research findings show that sodium hydroxide has better environmental performance in terms of GWP, while carbon black has lower acidification potential and EPS performs better in terms of human toxicity by air.

Influence of additives on the crystallization and thermal conductivity of container glass cullet for foamed glass preparation

Sonja Smiljanic et al.

Summary: The study found that waste container glass undergoes partial crystallization during the sintering process, which can be inhibited by adding fluxing agents. This can lead to a significant decrease in thermal conductivity of the foamed glass.
