Cement based-thermal energy storage mortar including blast furnace slag/capric acid shape-stabilized phase change material: Physical, mechanical, thermal properties and solar thermoregulation performance

Osman Gencel et al.

Summary: The efficiency of solar thermal energy in cementitious mortar is enhanced by using a phase change material (PCM) with thermal energy harvesting/releasing ability. A new type of cement-based thermal energy storage mortar (CBTESM) was developed by substituting blast furnace slag (BFS)/capric acid (CA) shape-stabilized PCM (SSPCM) with varying amounts of sand. The results showed that the addition of BFS did not affect the crystalline structure of CA, and successful impregnation of melted CA into BFS was confirmed. The CBTESM samples with SSPCM additives exhibited decreased bulk density, compressive strength, and thermal conductivity. The addition of 15% SSPCM was found to meet the standard conditions in terms of compressive strength. The developed CBTESM significantly reduced indoor temperature and showed potential for energy savings and carbon emission reduction.

Hygrothermal properties of soil-cement construction materials

Adriana Belen Costantini Romero et al.

Summary: Envelopes made with cement-stabilized earth blocks (CSEB) provide a sustainable solution for regulating hygrothermal conditions in buildings, using easily obtainable materials. Research findings indicate that compacted silt with low sand fraction and cement content between 3% and 9% exhibit low thermal conductivity and limited heat exchange capacity with the environment at low moisture levels.

Experimental thermal study of a new PCM-concrete thermal storage block (PCM-CTSB)

Yongliang Shen et al.

Summary: Phase change material concrete has been widely used in passive building energy conservation, but less research has been done for its application in active low temperature thermal storage systems. This study successfully prepared PCM-CLSC aggregate and PCM-concrete thermal storage blocks using CLSC, and testing results showed that increasing the PCM weight percentage can improve the specific heat capacity.

The heat capacity of low-temperature phase change materials (PCM) applied in thermal energy storage systems

Paulina Rolka et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the latent heat measurements of phase change materials used in low-temperature thermal energy storage, focusing on two commercially available materials and the impact of temperature change rate on the measured latent heat capacity. The results can be used in designing latent heat thermal energy storage systems working with renewable energy sources.
