Reasonable use of coral as concrete aggregate can solve raw material shortage in island engineering construction and reduce costs and energy consumption caused by marine transportation. However, the low compressive strength and high porosity of coral aggregates limit their application in island engineering construction.
Reasonable use of coral as concrete aggregate can solve the shortage of raw materials for islands engineering construction and effectively reduce the costs and energy consumption caused by marine transportation. How-ever, the typical characteristics of low compressive strength and high porosity of coral aggregates severely limit their application in island engineering construction. This paper reviewed the physicochemical characterization and the external and internal pore structure of coral aggregate. The effects of different sea areas, coral species, particle size, and other influencing factors on the porosity and compressive strength of coral aggregate samples were discussed, respectively. Further, a multi-factor model of compressive strength and porosity of coral aggregate was established considering the coral species and particle sizes. This review paper can provide a solid base for future research on the microstructure and mechanical properties of coral aggregate and promote the application of coral in marine engineering.
