Cohesive zone modeling of I-II mixed mode fracture behaviors of hot mix asphalt based on the semi-circular bending test

Weimin Song et al.

Summary: This study conducted I-II mixed mode fracture tests using cohesive zone modeling technique under -10 degrees C. It was found that increasing the notch angle increased the peak load and the contribution of mode II fracture on the overall fracture resistance, while the influence of loading rate was minimal.

Low-temperature performance grade characterisation of asphalt binder using the dynamic shear rheometer

Zhe 'Alan' Zeng et al.

Summary: The dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) can be used as an alternative method to the bending beam rheometer (BBR) test, predicting the performance of BBR using the time-temperature superposition principle and linear viscoelastic interconversion. Compared to BBR, DSR method has higher testing efficiency and lower specimen preparation difficulty.

Extended finite element modeling of hot mix asphalt based on the semi-circular bending test

Weimin Song et al.

Summary: Semi-circular bending (SCB) test was conducted to characterize the fracture behaviors of asphalt mixtures with different aggregate shapes. XFEM simulation was used to observe the initiation and propagation of cracks under different temperatures. The results showed that the shape of aggregates has an effect on the failure load and dissipated fracture energy in SCB test.

Inter-conversion of the generalized Kelvin and generalized Maxwell model parameters via a continuous spectrum method

Huijie Lv et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a continuous spectrum method for efficiently and accurately determining the parameters of the generalized Maxwell and generalized Kelvin models. By constructing complex modulus curves and establishing continuous relaxation and retardation spectra, the time and strength constants can be calculated, allowing for the determination of Prony series parameters and LVE variables of asphalt mixture. The accuracy of the method was validated through comparisons and the equivalence of the GM and GK models was confirmed in different domains.

An improved method to establish continuous relaxation spectrum of asphalt materials

Lei Xi et al.

Summary: This study developed an improved method to determine the continuous relaxation spectrum of asphalt materials, demonstrating compliance with LVE theory and physical causality. The generated relaxation spectrum was accurate enough to compare the storage modulus and loss modulus values recalculated by the relaxation spectrum with those predicted by master curve models, highlighting the limitations of the Kramers-Kronig relation for establishing the relaxation spectrum of asphalt materials. Additionally, the generated relaxation spectrum was utilized to construct the relaxation modulus of mixtures and to develop the stiffness modulus of binders, both consistent with LVE theory and physical causality.

An extended search method for identifying optimal parameters of the generalized Maxwell model

Huijie Lv et al.

Summary: This study developed an extended search method to determine the optimal relaxation time range (ORTR) and validated the accuracy and universality of the Prony series model. The results showed that the Prony series model with the ORTR had good model fitting and the distributions of Delta(up) and Delta(w) satisfied the normal distribution.
