Life cycle assessment and mechanical properties of high strength steel fiber reinforced concrete containing waste PET bottle

Iman M. Nikbin et al.

Summary: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is commonly used in the production of beverage bottles and packaging materials, but often becomes waste after one use. This study explores the potential of recycling and reusing PET particles in the concrete industry as a solution to environmental hazards. The research examines the effects of PET particles and steel fibers on the properties of plain high-strength concrete, including ultrasonic pulse velocity, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and impact response. The results indicate that replacing up to 15% of sand with PET particles decreases tensile strength and modulus of elasticity, while increasing steel fibers leads to an increase in splitting tensile strength, elastic modulus, and impact resistance. Additionally, using concrete with PET particles reduces CO2 emissions, making it a more environmentally friendly option.

Strain-rate effect of polymers and correction methodology in a SHPB test

F. Liu et al.

Summary: This study utilizes the SHPB technique to measure the dynamic strength of polymers at high strain-rates and finds that lateral inertia and strain-rate significantly influence the dynamic strengthening effect of polymers. An iterative correction methodology is proposed to identify the actual strain-rate effect, which is validated on polycarbonate and applicable to other polymers.

Mechanical and Durability Assessment of Recycled Waste Plastic (Resin8 & PET) Eco-Aggregate Concrete

Adewumi John Babafemi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of recycled plastic waste to replace natural sand in concrete and explores the performance of a unique combination of all types of plastics and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). The results show that both Resin8 and PET are suitable as partial replacements for sand in concrete.

High-strain rate tension behavior of Fiber-Reinforced Rubberized Concrete

Dade Lai et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the high-strain rate splitting tension behavior of Fiber-Reinforced Rubberized Concrete (FRRC) for the first time. The experimental program characterizes the effects of fiber addition and rubber aggregate substitution on the deformation capacity and tensile strength of FRRC, as well as their strain rate dependency. Data-driven models for compression and tension strength reduction factors and tension Dynamic Increase Factor are proposed. The study also provides a discussion on the image-based damage development processes. The results suggest that FRRC exhibits excellent high-strain rate tension behavior, reducing and controlling crack propagation.

Dynamic compressive and flexural behaviors of ultra-rapid-hardening mortar containing polyethylene fibers

Booki Chun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic, compressive, and flexural behaviors of ultra-rapid-hardening mortar (URHM) containing 2% polyethylene fiber. The results show that URHM exhibits robust strain-hardening behavior at an early age of 4 hours, with strength and toughness increasing with strain rate. Under impact loads, URHM's deflection-hardening behavior is converted to deflection-softening behavior.

Evaluation of concrete performance with different types of recycled plastic waste for kerb application

Mahmoud Abu-Saleem et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using recycled plastic waste to partially replace coarse aggregate in concrete for kerbing application. Results showed that up to 20% replacement of PET and PP improved abrasion resistance, with PET also exhibiting acceptable drying shrinkage compared to the control mix. Microstructural analysis revealed that mixes containing PET had better bond strength compared to HDPE and PP.

High-strain rate compressive behavior of concrete made with substituted coarse aggregates: Recycled crushed concrete and clay bricks

Beibei Xiong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the high-strain rate compressive behavior of concrete made with different levels of substitution and types of coarse aggregate. The results showed that Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC) and Recycled clay Bricks Concrete (RBC) are more strain-rate sensitive than Natural Aggregate Concrete (NAC), with the Dynamic Increase Factor (DIF) depending significantly on the level of substitution in RAC.

Tensile and compressive behavior of self-compacting concrete incorporating PET as fine aggregate substitution after thermal exposure: Experiments and modeling

Ali Hasan-Ghasemi et al.

Summary: This study focused on the impact of using PET particles as a substitution for fine aggregate on the mechanical performance of SCC under different thermal exposure conditions. The results showed that at higher exposure temperatures, mechanical features of SCC with higher PET substitution levels significantly decreased. Empirical formulas for predicting mechanical features were proposed, along with a stress-strain relationship to capture the compressive response of SCCs containing waste PET particles following exposure to high temperatures.

The impact resistance of Fiber-Reinforced concrete with polypropylene fibers and GFRP wrapping

A. Kheyroddin et al.

Summary: The research showed that the impact resistance of concrete structures can be enhanced by using higher-strength concrete, higher polypropylene ratios, or GFRP wrapping. Among them, the impact of GFRP wrapping on improving impact resistance was significantly greater compared to polypropylene fibers or concrete strength.
