Properties of ternary blended cement containing ground granulated blast furnace slag and ground coal bottom ash

Cheah Chee Ban et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the physical and mechanical properties of cement containing ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and ground coal bottom ash (GCBA) at various cement replacement ratios. The optimum cement replacement level with GCBA was found to be 10%. Additionally, the appropriate binder combination ratio and dosage of superplasticizer were crucial for ternary blended paste. In conclusion, the incorporation of GCBA in combination with GGBS enhanced both the mechanical and physical properties compared to GGBS binary blended cement mortar.

Feasibility for co-utilisation of Carbonated Reactive Magnesia Cement (CRMC) and industrial wastes in circular economy and CO2 mineralisation

Erick Grunhauser Soares et al.

Summary: The increased concern about climate change has led to a growing research interest in alternatives to mitigate its effects. This study evaluates the feasibility of incorporating different waste sources into Carbonated Reactive Magnesia Cement (CRMC)-based mortars. The results show that the designed mortars with waste materials have achieved good strength values and effective carbonation, indicating their potential for reducing CO2 emissions in the construction sector.

Improvement in flexural strength of Portland cement by lamellar structured montmorillonite

Xianyue Gu et al.

Summary: Lamellar structured montmorillonite obtained through wet grinding was found to significantly enhance the flexural strength of Portland cement, especially in the early stages. This was attributed to the lamellar structure inducing the formation of hydrates in two dimensions and the filling effect improving the pore structure.

Effective strategies to realize high-performance graphene-reinforced cement composites

Felipe Basquiroto de Souza et al.

Summary: Due to their special properties, graphene-based nanosheets (GNS) have the potential to be used in the production of high-performance and sustainable cement composites. This review focuses on the recent advancements in GNS-reinforced cementitious composites, specifically the strategies used to effectively incorporate GNS into cement/concrete mixes (such as dispersion, hybridization, coating, and dry mixing approaches). The impacts of GNS-reinforcement on the mechanical, durability, and functional performance of cementitious materials are also analyzed. Additionally, the increasing understanding of the distribution and interplay of GNS within the complex cement microstructure is highlighted, with the aim of confidently translating GNS into the construction industry.

Nano C-S-H seeds prepared from ground granulated blast-furnace slag-carbide slag and its application in Portland cement

Xianyue Gu et al.

Summary: This study prepared nano C-S-H seeds (NCSH) by wet grinding ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) and carbide slag (CS) to enhance the early mechanical properties of Portland cement (PC). The results showed that adding NCSH significantly increased the early compressive strength of PC and reduced the setting time. This study provides a new method to improve the performance of cement.

Strategies for XRD quantitative phase analysis of ordinary and blended Portland cements

P. R. De Matos et al.

Summary: This paper discusses important aspects of using the PONKCS approach for quantitative phase analysis in Portland cements. The experiment results show that using the March-Dollase function for preferred orientation correction can improve the accuracy of the method, and the choice of space group and background fit also directly affects the accuracy of the models.

Effect of curing time on thermal response characterization of carbon-nano cementitious composites

Heeyoung Lee et al.

Summary: Incorporating small amounts of MWCNTs into cement-based materials enhances heat generation and thermal response, with the heat generation increasing with curing time and MWCNT concentrations. The composite's heat generation increases quadratically with MWCNT concentration, and electrical resistance is dependent on the hydration reaction progress. In cementitious composites with higher MWCNT concentrations, electrical resistance decreases with increasing curing days.
