Formulation and optimization of a phosphogypsum-fly ash-lime composite for road construction: A statistical mixture design approach

Sarra Meskini et al.

Summary: The study investigated the valorization of phosphogypsum and fly ash as road construction materials through lime stabilization. Statistical analysis showed that phosphogypsum addition decreased measured responses, while fly ash and lime caused them to increase. Fly ash addition notably increased compressive strengths at early ages, while at longer curing periods, the interaction with lime and the use of phosphogypsum as a catalyst improved fly ash reactivity.

Research on basalt fiber reinforced phosphogypsum-based composites based on single factor test and RSM test

Lang Xie et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of basalt fibers (BFs) with different lengths and dosages on the properties of phosphogypsum-based composites (PGCs). It was found that BFs significantly enhanced the strength and toughness of the mixtures, reduced porosity, and water absorption. The fiber dosage had a greater impact on the properties than fiber length, and their interaction varied based on the tested properties. RSM models successfully predicted optimal parameters for multi-objective optimization of the composites.

Green conversion of hazardous red mud into diagnostic X-ray shielding tiles

Varsha Agrawal et al.

Summary: The study successfully converted iron-rich red mud into diagnostic X-ray shielding tiles by adding barium sulfate and binders, demonstrating sufficient impact strength and flexural strength suitable for wall applications. The red mud tiles were found to possess attenuation equivalent to lead at certain x-ray voltages, with minimal leaching of heavy elements, making them a safer alternative to toxic lead sheets for protecting against radiation hazards in medical settings.

Physical properties, strength, and impurities stability of phosphogypsum-based cold-bonded aggregates

Chao Ding et al.

Summary: Novel recycling of phosphogypsum through granulation technology to produce phosphogypsum-based cold-bonded aggregates (PCBAs) is a potential strategy. The study found that increasing phosphogypsum content in the PCBAs resulted in decreased physical properties and mechanical strength, increased water absorption, and increased proportion of harmful pores. Leaching tests showed that the concentration of phosphorus and heavy metals in the PCBAs was reduced compared to the original phosphogypsum. The study concluded that PCBAs with phosphogypsum content up to 80% are qualified lightweight aggregates (LWAs) for concrete.

Effects of red mud on workability and mechanical properties of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC)

Yufeng Song et al.

Summary: Red mud poses a severe threat to the environment and needs to be properly disposed of. When using red mud in autoclave aerated concrete (AAC), its low activity and small particle size negatively impact the workability and strength of AAC. Additionally, a higher amount of red mud results in worse pore structure and excessive content of tobermorite, leading to reduced strength. The optimal ratio of red mud to replace fly ash in AAC is 22.5%, and the overall performance of AAC with red mud can be greatly improved by using polycarboxylic acid or adjusting the water-solid ratio, meeting the standard requirements.

Xi Lan et al.

Summary: In this study, an environmental-friendly method was proposed for the recovery and harmless utilization of soluble sodium in red mud. The soluble sodium was selectively solidified and efficiently recovered from red mud, minimizing its high alkalinity. The solidification mechanism of sodium in anorthite and melilite was confirmed, providing a theoretical basis for minimizing alkalinity and making red mud harmless.
