Half a century of global decline in oceanic sharks and rays

Summary: Overfishing is the primary cause of marine defaunation, with global abundance of oceanic sharks and rays declining by 71% since 1970. Three-quarters of the species in this important assemblage are now at risk of extinction. Urgent measures, such as strict fishing prohibitions and science-based catch limits, are needed to prevent further population collapse and promote species recovery.

Summary: The challenge of precisely identifying shark and ray species from the fin trade due to high demand for shark fin soup in Asia has led to overexploitation of elasmobranch populations worldwide. Many studies have reported the presence of threatened and protected elasmobranchs in the Asian trade market, showing the failure of current management and conservation policies. New approaches include developing standardized DNA-based methods, high throughput sequencing protocols, and increasing knowledge about population genetics data to combat illegal shark and ray fin trade.

Summary: A study found that a shipment of dry shark fins examined by German customs in 2017 contained a mixture of CITES regulated and unregulated shark species, making it difficult to identify CITES species using morphological methods. It is suggested that German customs authorities use random molecular screening to check and identify CITES regulated species in transit shipments.
