Animal agency in wildlife conservation and management

Summary: This research proposes that wild nonhuman animals should be recognized as active participants in wildlife conservation and management (WCM) and highlights the shortcomings of current WCM approaches. To address these shortcomings, it suggests re-conceptualizing the relationship between animals and humans and incorporating the concept of animal agency into conservation problem-solving.

Summary: Consistent individual differences in behavior, often referred to as animal personality, have significant implications for fitness, natural selection, and trophic interactions across a wide range of species. A literature review of 654 studies revealed that there is a bias towards studying mammalian species in relation to animal personality, with limited research conducted on amphibians and reptiles. The most common conservation subfields integrated with animal personality research were climate change, invasive species, and captive breeding and reintroduction, but there is room for improvement in the integration between these fields.
