Bacterial species metabolic interaction network for deciphering the lignocellulolytic system in fungal cultivating termite gut microbiota

Pritam Kundu et al.

Summary: The fungus-cultivating termite Odontotermes badius has a mutualistic association with Termitomyces fungi for plant material decomposition, with the microbial symbiotic relationships influencing community-wide lignocellulose degradation functionality. The metabolic interactions and influence networks among the bacterial species in the termite gut and fungal comb have been studied to identify key players in the degradation process. Competition, parasitism, and mutualism were predicted to be the major modes of metabolic interaction within a synthetic microbial community, with the crucial bacterial species and their glycoside hydrolase enzymes playing a significant role in maintaining efficient lignocellulolytic machinery.

Metabolic modeling of the International Space Station microbiome reveals key microbial interactions

Rachita K. Kumar et al.

Summary: This study predicts possible metabolic interactions in the ISS microbiome using a computational approach and sheds further light on its organization. The results show beneficial interactions between Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pantoea genus, and parasitic and amensalistic interactions between Klebsiella pneumoniae and Aspergillus and Penicillium species. Klebsiella pneumoniae has positive effects on the survival of other microorganisms, but may also have negative interactions with potential pathogens.

Polarization of microbial communities between competitive and cooperative metabolism

Daniel Machado et al.

Summary: The study shows that microbial communities cluster at different ends of the spectrum between resource competition and metabolic cooperation. Cooperative communities tend to have smaller genomes and multiple auxotrophies, whereas competitive communities have larger genomes, overlapping niches, and a high potential for antimicrobial activity.

Summary: Researchers developed a metabolic model of host human cells infected with SARS-CoV-2, predicting rapid virus growth rates. Flux analysis identified lipid metabolism as severely affected during infection, with key enzymes directly interacting with viral proteins. The study demonstrates the importance of metabolic flux analysis in understanding disease biology and potential therapeutic interventions.

Metabolic modelling reveals broad changes in gut microbial metabolism in inflammatory bowel disease patients with dysbiosis

Almut Heinken et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's Disease, are characterized by changes in blood and fecal metabolites and alterations in gut microbiome composition. A systems biology framework was used to connect microbial strains and fecal metabolites, revealing differences in metabolite contributions and diversity between healthy and dysbiotic microbiomes, leading to potential novel therapeutic and dietary interventions.

Designing microbial communities to maximize the thermodynamic driving force for the production of chemicals

Pavlos Stephanos Bekiaris et al.

Summary: Microbial communities are crucial for biogeochemical cycles, biomedicine, and biotechnological applications. While naturally arising communities are used in some processes, the design of synthetic microbial consortia for bio-based production has gained interest. A new computational approach, ASTHERISC, has been developed to design single-species multi-strain communities for maximizing thermodynamic driving force for product synthesis. This approach shows potential for improving microbial community design for chemical production.

Metabolic modelling approaches for describing and engineering microbial communities

Beatriz Garcia-Jimenez et al.

Summary: Microbes do not live in isolation but in microbial communities. Most methods and biotechnological applications involving microorganisms have been developed in the context of isolated microbes, making in vivo microbial consortia development extremely difficult and costly. Computational approaches provide a cost-effective alternative to study microbial communities via descriptive and engineering modelling.
