Modeling of multifield coupling interactions in an aerobic landfill based on the finite volume method

Qi-Teng Zheng et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional multifield coupled model was developed in this study to reveal the multiple field interactions in an aerobic landfill. The results showed that a certain amount of oxygen is distributed around the aeration well, while methane volume fraction decreases in most regions. The temperature in the aerobic reaction area increased up to 60 degrees Celsius, accelerating water evaporation and inhibiting the reaction. The maximum vapor volume fraction occurs at the aerobic front.

Biochemical-thermal-hydro-mechanical coupling model for aerobic degradation of landfilled municipal solid waste

D. K. Xiao et al.

Summary: This article proposes a biochemical-thermal-hydro-mechanical coupling model to understand and verify the aerobic degradation process in landfills. The model is validated by comparison with an in-situ experiment at Jinkou landfill. The results show that the model accurately represents the observed degradation phenomena. The temperature increase rate and peak temperature in the upper layer are influenced by heat exchange at the landfill surface. The lowest temperatures occur near the bottom due to high water content and low oxygen concentrations. The high temperature zone migrates out from the injection well during degradation, indicating the degradation of degradable organic matter. The initial settlement value is fast, but slows and eventually stabilizes. Surface subsidence develops from the center around the injection well to the surrounding area, with 70% occurring within 150 days.

Summary: This paper introduces a numerical model based on the theories of mass, momentum, and energy conservation for describing the long-term behavior of landfilled municipal solid waste. The model was validated through comparisons between experimental results and simulations, demonstrating its effectiveness in capturing the complex processes involved in MSW degradation.

Summary: This study proposed a one-dimensional coupled model to describe oxygen distribution in a modified aerobic landfill, solving it using homotopy analysis method and perturbation method. The research quantitatively investigated the coupled effect of various variables on oxygen migration and developed a generalized design method for waste layer thickness, injection pressure, and extraction pressure in the new landfill concept.

A semi-analytical model for methane transport and oxidation in a soil cover

Qiao Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that gas-solid reactions, oxygen flux, and soil moisture content significantly impact methane emission efficiency during methane transport. Additionally, the effects of advection and oxidation on methane transport are more pronounced when Pe > 1 and Da > 10, respectively.

Slope stability analysis of a landfill subjected to leachate recirculation and aeration considering bio-hydro coupled processes

Shi-Jin Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stability of landfill slopes during leachate recirculation and aeration through three-dimensional numerical analysis. The results show that increasing injection pressure for leachate recirculation and anaerobic biodegradation rate can reduce the factor of safety significantly, while neglecting waste degradation and gas flow may lead to overestimation of slope stability. Additionally, the study proposes a relationship between safe aeration pressure and the location of the air injection screen to prevent landfill slope failure during aeration.
