Investigation of the effect of different injection schemes on fracture network patterns in hot dry rocks - A numerical case study of the FORGE EGS site in Utah

Zixu Hu et al.

Summary: Multi-stage stimulation using alternative injection has been successfully applied in low mobility hydrocarbon production, but the impact of different injection schemes on hydraulic fracture propagation regimes in hot dry rock geothermal reservoirs remains inadequate. This study used PFC2D software to determine that cyclic injection can create more branched fractures due to non-uniform stress and fatigue, while stepped injection tends to activate preexisting natural fractures and produce a single main fracture with few branches. Different injection methods can lead to different propagation regimes and variations in the fracture network, with stepped injection showing larger surface area and aperture compared to cyclic injection.

A Reference Thermal-Hydrologic-Mechanical Native State Model of the Utah FORGE Enhanced Geothermal Site

Robert Podgorney et al.

Summary: FORGE is a geothermal research site funded by the US Department of Energy located near Milford, Utah, focusing on enhanced geothermal system research and development. A three-dimensional geological model describing the structure and temperature at the site has been developed based on compiled data. The model will help predict and plan specific activities.
