Influence of fiber misalignments on buckling performance of variable stiffness composites using layerwise models and random fields

A. Pagani et al.

Summary: This paper explores the influence of fiber misalignment on the buckling response of laminated VAT composites, using the Carrera Unified Formulation to develop layerwise models. Random fields are used to generate variation patterns, and the results show that layerwise models outperform equivalent single layer theories.

Geometrically nonlinear dynamic analysis of variable stiffness composite laminated and sandwich shell panels

Ankita Gupta et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonlinear free and forced vibration analyses of variable stiffness composite laminated (VSCL) and sandwich shell panels with curvilinear fibers were conducted using a higher-order theory. The structural model considered a third-order shear deformation theory, and geometric nonlinearity was included through von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relations. The results were compared with existing exact and analytical solutions to validate the model.

A non-linear Ritz method for the analysis of low velocity impact induced dynamics in variable angle tow composite laminates

A. Milazzo et al.

Summary: This study introduces a formulation for analyzing impact-induced dynamics in VAT laminated plates, which is implemented and tested. The method utilizes first order shear deformation kinematics and von Karman non-linear strains to develop a discrete system with an impact loading model and an algorithm for solving non-linear governing equations.

Analytical higher-order-theories for noise reduction analysis of viscoelastic composite multilayered shells

A. Alaimo et al.

Summary: In this study, an analytical Navier-type solution based on higher-order layer-wise shell models is proposed to analyze the sound insulation performance of laminated panels. The use of soft interlayers achieves a passive insulation effect, while the damping behavior of a realistic viscoelastic layer is modeled through a fractional derivative Zener model. The Rayleigh integral method is utilized for extrapolating acoustic indicators in sound transmission analysis, and results show the efficiency of the approach through comparison with literature solutions.

Eigenfrequencies of prestressed variable stiffness composite shells

Giuseppe Sciascia et al.

Summary: The introduction of the variable stiffness concept has expanded the design space for high-performance lightweight composite structures, allowing for more effective solutions with higher overall stiffness. A versatile Ritz method for eigenfrequency analysis of prestressed variable stiffness laminated doubly-curved shells is presented, with reliable and efficient results compared to finite element solutions. Parametric studies show the flexibility provided by the variable stiffness concept for finding trade-off solutions for prestressed shell components.

Buckling Sensitivity of Tow-Steered Plates Subjected to Multiscale Defects by High-Order Finite Elements and Polynomial Chaos Expansion

Alberto Racionero Sanchez-Majano et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the buckling response of Variable Stiffness Composite plates subjected to spatially varying factors, utilizing Carrera Unified Formulation and layer-wise modeling, as well as conducting multiscale sensitivity analysis. The study shows that the multiscale sensitivity approach can be accelerated with the use of sampling techniques and surrogate models like Polynomial Chaos Expansion.
