Mixed network DEA models with shared resources for measuring and decomposing performance of public transportation systems

Chao -Chung Kang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a hybrid two-stage network model and a mixed network DEA with the shared-inputs model to jointly measure the efficiency and effectiveness of a metro transport system. Results from the hybrid two-stage network and mixed network DEA models indicate that the performance measures or ranks differ significantly when using non-parametrical statistical tests. Transit system operators can gain more complete performance information on subsystems from the results of the mixed network DEA model than from the hybrid two-stage network model, enabling further improvements to their systems and sub-systems.

Evaluation to fixed-sum-outputs DMUs by non-oriented equilibrium efficient frontier DEA approach with Nash bargaining-based selection

Shasha Yu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new non-oriented EEFDEA approach to assess the efficiency of decision-making units by capturing input excesses and output shortfalls simultaneously. A bargaining-based selection method is also presented to deal with multiple feasible EEFs. The method can generate a unique and Pareto-optimal EEF.

Performance evaluation of Chinese research universities: A parallel interactive network DEA approach with shared and fixed sum inputs

Tao Ding et al.

Summary: In recent years, the Chinese government and universities have been working to improve the quality of higher education through university performance evaluation. Research activities in Chinese universities have distinct characteristics, including parallel interactive network structures and limited financial support. Previous studies have not addressed these features correctly, leading to potentially biased results. This paper proposes a novel data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach to evaluate university performance, taking into account the shared fixed-sum input in the network DEA model. The empirical application of the models to Chinese universities reveals variations in overall efficiency and provides recommendations for policymakers.

Analysis of CO2 emission performance of China's thermal power industry: a meta-frontier Malmquist-Luenberger approach with fixed-sum CO2 emissions

Jiawei Li et al.

Summary: This study combines two methods, general equilibrium efficient frontier data envelopment analysis (GEEFDEA) and meta-frontier Malmquist-Luenberger productivity index (MMLPI), to measure the CO2 emission performance (CEP) of China's provincial-level thermal power industries. The results show that the CEP of China's thermal power industry was good during the sample period, mainly due to technical efficiency gains and technological progress. The study also reveals that the drivers of CEP changes differ between provinces, suggesting the need for tailored policies to improve CEP.

Summary: The study indicates that the overall TSCDEE of Chinese provinces is 0.618, suggesting the need for improvements, with the highest TSCDEE provinces located in developed coastal regions of China. Factors such as transportation structure and technological progress have significant positive effects on TSCDEE, while urbanization level and urban population density exert significantly negative effects on TSCDEE.

Measuring Environmental Performance of Provincial Thermal Power Plants in China: A Malmquist DEA Approach with Fixed-Sum Undesirable Outputs

Hou Wenhui et al.

Summary: With the development of China's economy, environmental pollution has become increasingly serious. Thermal power generation is the primary source of environmental pollution, and it is necessary to study how to limit the undesirable output of thermal power plants to reduce pollution. However, there is currently no suggestion on the fixed value of these undesirable outputs. This paper proposes a novel approach to evaluate the environmental performance of thermal power plants and applies it to provincial plants in China for empirical analysis.

Measuring the energy production and utilization efficiency of Chinese thermal power industry with the fixed-sum carbon emission constraint

Feng Li et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of the Chinese economy, China has become one of the largest countries in terms of energy consumption and carbon emissions. The Chinese government recently announced its dual carbon policy target, aiming to achieve carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. The thermal power industry, as a crucial energy sector and source of carbon emissions in China, plays a vital role in meeting energy needs and achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality. In this study, a two-stage data envelopment analysis approach is proposed to measure and analyze the energy production-utilization efficiency of the Chinese thermal power industry, considering the fixed-sum carbon emission constraint. The empirical analysis focuses on the provincial level from 2015 to 2019, providing insights into the energy production-utilization efficiency of the thermal power industry in China.

Efficiency intervals, rank intervals and dominance relations of decision-making units with fixed-sum outputs

Summary: This paper discusses the evaluation of decision-making units (DMUs) with fixed-sum outputs in data envelopment analysis (DEA). The challenges include determining a common efficient frontier and dealing with multiple feasible efficient frontiers. By considering all feasible efficient frontiers, the paper develops models to obtain efficiency intervals, ranking intervals, and dominance relations for DMUs with fixed-sum outputs, leading to more informative results compared to previous DEA approaches.

Summary: This study extends the multi-directional efficiency analysis to evaluate the energy and environmental performance of China's transportation sector in 30 provincial-level regions during 2008-2017. The findings show that the transportation sector in the east area performs the best, followed by the central area, and the west area performs the worst. CO2 emissions perform better than energy consumption, indicating that China's transportation sector pays more attention to emission reduction rather than energy conservation.
