DEA under big data: data enabled analytics and network data envelopment analysis

Joe Zhu

Summary: This paper proposes that data envelopment analysis should be seen as a data-oriented analytics method for performance evaluation and benchmarking. Network DEA is a big data enabled analytics method that can extract valuable information from network structures. It differs from conventional DEA and can solve nonconvex optimization problems. Areas like transportation, logistics, and supply chains have the potential to use network DEA in big data modeling.

Big data efficiency analysis: Improved algorithms for data envelopment analysis involving large datasets

Andreas Dellnitz

Summary: Data sets are growing larger, leading to big data concerns, including in data envelopment analysis (DEA). Improved decomposition-based algorithms are proposed to address the curse of dimensionality in DEA, with different termination criteria and multithreading introduced. The convergence of the algorithm is proven for some criteria, and extensive numerical analysis demonstrates the scalability of the algorithm.

LASSO plus DEA for small and big wide data

Ya Chen et al.

Summary: This study introduced the LASSO-SCNLS and EN-DEA methods for addressing the curse of dimensionality in data envelopment analysis, along with a simplified approach called LASSO + DEA. The research found that these methods have different advantages and disadvantages in dealing with big wide data, with no clear dominance of one method over the others.

On aggregation of multi-factor productivity indexes

Rolf Fare et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the importance of aggregation of Paasche and Laspeyres versions of the Malmquist quantity and productivity indexes from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. It discusses existing justifications and provides an alternative theoretical justification based on results from the functional equations literature. Real data is used to illustrate the dramatic differences in conclusions depending on whether one employs Laspeyres or Paasche productivity indexes in practice.
