Phase field fracture predictions of microscopic bridging behaviour of composite materials

Wei Tan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of microstructural bridging on the fracture toughness of composite materials. A new computational framework is proposed to simulate various fracture processes and validate its accuracy. The results show that microstructural bridging can significantly enhance the fracture toughness, particularly the 3D fibre bridging effect. These findings shed light on microscopic bridging mechanisms and provide important guidance for developing high fracture toughness composites.

Micromechanics-based phase field fracture modelling of CNT composites

Leonel Quinteros et al.

Summary: We propose a novel micromechanics-based phase field approach to simulate crack initiation and propagation in carbon nanotube (CNT) based composites. The mechanical and fracture properties of the nanocomposites are estimated by means of a mean-field homogenisation approach, taking into account the inhomogeneous dispersion of CNTs with equivalent inclusions. Detailed parametric analyses are conducted to evaluate the influence of micromechanical properties on the fracture behavior of CNT-based composites. The previously estimated properties are then incorporated into a phase field fracture model to simulate crack initiation and growth in CNT-based composites.

A coupled phase field formulation for modelling fatigue cracking in lithium-ion battery electrode particles

Weilong Ai et al.

Summary: This study develops a multi-physics phase field fatigue model to study crack propagation in battery electrode particles. By coupling with X-ray CT imaging, fatigue cracking of realistic particle microstructures is simulated. Non-linear crack propagation behavior is predicted, with an exponential increase in cracked area observed with cycle number. Three stages of crack growth and phenomena such as crack initialization at concave regions and crack coalescence are observed. The critical values of C-rate, particle size, and initial crack length are determined.
