Effect of thermal cycles on laser direct energy deposition repair performance of nickel-based superalloy: Microstructure and tensile properties

Yan Zeng et al.

Summary: Solidification conditions and cooling rate have a significant impact on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Nickel-based superalloy GH4169 components repaired by laser direct energy deposition (L-DED). In this study, inter-channel dwell time was used to control the thermal cycles during deposition, resulting in regulated microstructure and tensile properties of the repaired GH4169 groove. Tensile tests with digital image correlation (DIC) technique and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were conducted to compare the tensile properties and investigate the microstructure and fracture mechanism. The results showed that different inter-channel dwell times led to significant differences in dendrite structure, grain size, primary dendrite arm spacing, and distribution of Laves and gamma '' phases in the repaired material. The tensile strength of the repaired material increased with longer inter-channel dwell time, and the repaired GH4169 materials exhibited similar or even higher tensile strength than the substrate material. The study demonstrated a novel method for achieving high-quality repair of superalloys through laser direct energy deposition.

The learning of the precipitates morphological parameters from the composition of nickel-based superalloys

Yunqiang Wang et al.

Summary: High-throughput experiments on superalloys have become common, generating large amounts of data. A machine learning model was designed to automate the experimental analysis process, using the Unet algorithm to segment precipitated phases from superalloy images and a regression algorithm to predict morphological parameters based on their composition. This method may offer guidance for future superalloy composition design.
