Pharmaceutical Advertising and the Subtle Subversion of Patient Autonomy

Casey Rentmeester

Summary: Direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising (DTCPA) is a widespread practice in the United States, and this article examines its effects on consumer behavior and the changing relationship between individuals and physicians. The author provides a historical overview of pharmaceutical advertising in the country, analyzes current marketing techniques used by pharmaceutical companies, and argues that they act as irrational authorities seeking to exploit individuals. Drawing on concepts from philosophers in the Continental tradition, with a focus on Michel Foucault's work, the author explores the power relations involved in DTCPA and asserts that it undermines patient autonomy while also depending on it by treating health consumers as manipulable entities.
