Dopamine concentration-dependent surface modification for gaining carbon fiber composites with enhanced interfacial adhesion

Qing Wu et al.

Summary: The self-assembly process of dopamine on graphitized carbon fiber and its effects on interfacial adhesion of composites were studied. It was found that the dopamine concentration plays a crucial role in determining the morphology of polydopamine on the fiber surface, which in turn affects the performance of the fiber-epoxy resin interface.

Fracture properties of quasi-isotropic carbon-fiber-reinforced polyamide 6 laminates with different crystal structure of polyamide 6 due to surface profiles of carbon fibers

Hideyuki Uematsu et al.

Summary: The study found that the mechanical properties of PA6/CF composites varied depending on the surface texture of the carbon fibers, with similar flexural strength and modulus but significant differences in impact absorption capacity and fracture patterns. It was also discovered that the distribution of PA6 crystals between CFs was related to the failure behavior of PA6/CF laminates.

Superior hygrothermal resistance and interfacial adhesion by ternary thermoplastic polymer blend matrix for carbon fiber composite

Takayuki Hirai et al.

Summary: Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTPs) with superior mechanical properties and hygrothermal resistance were fabricated using a strategically designed ternary polymer blend, which improved the moisture and heat stability of the material while maintaining good adhesion to carbon fibers. The components in the blend, including phenol novolac (PN) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), cooperatively contribute to enhancing the hygrothermal resistance of the polymer, resulting in CFRTPs with higher stiffness under hygrothermal conditions compared to traditional PA6-matrix CFRTPs.
