Experimental and numerical evaluation of conduction welded thermoplastic composite joints

B. H. A. H. Tijs et al.

Summary: This study investigates the strength and failure behavior of conduction welded thermoplastic composite joints through numerical and experimental evaluation. The research finds that the joint strength is highly influenced not only by the failure mechanisms of the welded interface but also of the surrounding plies. The high-fidelity modeling methodology can predict the experimental failure mode of welded joints with high accuracy and offers new insights into the key variables influencing the strength of thermoplastic welded joints.

Low velocity impact resistance of thin and toughened carbon fibre reinforced epoxy

Andreas Klingler et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of core-shell rubber nanoparticle and block copolymer matrix modifications on the low velocity impact resistance of thin, multi-axial carbon fibre reinforced epoxy laminates. The results show that the damage resistance is greatly enhanced to impact energies of 9 J and 13 J, but a proper bonding between matrix and the embedded fibres is essential. Lower impact energies do not activate the toughening agents effectively.

Improving the quality of continuous ultrasonically welded thermoplastic composite joints by adding a consolidator to the welding setup

Bram Jongbloed et al.

Summary: Continuous ultrasonic welding is a promising technique for joining thermoplastic composite structures, but current research shows the presence of deconsolidation voids at the welding interface, leading to reduced strength. This study aims to improve weld quality by adding a consolidation shoe to the welding setup and determines the optimal consolidation pressure, shoe size, and distance from the sonotrode through a stepwise approach. Results show that the furthest consolidation distance achieves high-quality welds with minimal porosity and high strength.

The effects of misaligned adherends on static ultrasonic welding of thermoplastic composites

C. B. G. Brito et al.

Summary: This research investigates the influence of misaligned adherends on static ultrasonic welding of thermoplastic composites by creating different angles through changing the clamping configuration. The results show that increasing the angle between adherends decreases power consumption, increases process time, decreases weld uniformity, and increases the risk of overheating. Reducing the top adherends' bending stiffness by increasing the clamping distance significantly reduces the adverse effects of adherend misalignment on weld quality.

Nesreen Abdulfattah et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the optimal welding parameters for different dental PEEK grades using ultrasonic welding in order to achieve maximum weld strength. The results showed that increasing welding energy led to increased welding time and surface deformation, while a reasonable welding energy resulted in higher shear bond strength.

Texture and intermetallic compounds of the Cu/Al dissimilar joints by high power ultrasonic welding

Jian Liu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the microstructure and intermetallic compounds of Cu/Al joints produced by high power ultrasonic welding (HUSW). The research found that the welding time had little effect on the grain morphology and size of pure copper, but had a significant impact on the aluminum alloy. Moreover, the texture characteristics of copper and aluminum alloy also changed during the welding process.

Lab-based in-situ micro-CT observation of gaps in prepreg laminates during consolidation and cure

James Kratz et al.

Summary: An experimental technique was developed to obtain 3D microstructural information on typical lay-up features in automated fibre placement or automated tape laying, with a focus on parallel-ply gaps and ply-drop gaps. Using lab-based CT scanning, different mechanisms of squeezing and bleeding during the manufacturing process were observed. The study found that parallel-ply gaps consolidate faster and reach lower porosity levels compared to ply-drop gaps, but previously consolidated voids may reappear and remain in the final microstructure.

Enhancing weld attributes in ultrasonic spot welding of carbon fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites: Effect of sonotrode configurations and process control

Tian Zhao et al.

Summary: The research aims to improve the manufacturing efficiency and weld attributes of ultrasonic spot welded joints by adopting proper sonotrodes combined with process control techniques. It was conducted in two steps, first using sonotrodes with different diameters for single-spot ultrasonic welding, then proposing a simultaneous spot welding technique for two welded spots. Results showed that increasing sonotrode size and using proper welding force can significantly enhance welding efficiency and attributes.
