Modeling and analysis of an electro-magneto-elastic rotating cylindrical tube actuator

Deepak Kumar et al.

Summary: This paper presents the static modeling and analysis of a novel cylindrical tube actuator subjected to a rotation about the longitudinal axis with an internally applied air pressure under an electromagnetic field. The developed continuum mechanics-based electro-magneto-mechanical model is validated by comparing with the outputs of an existing spring roll actuator. Parametric studies are performed to investigate the effects of input pressure, electric field, magnetic field, fillers content, and actuator's rotational speed. The results provide important insights for the design of modern actuators with precise control and high load-carrying capability.

Constitutive modeling for the tear fracture of artificial tissues in human-like soft robots

Sankalp Gour et al.

Summary: Artificial tissues made of fiber-reinforced polymeric materials have mechanical properties similar to biological tissues, making them suitable for designing human-like soft robots. This research focuses on the constitutive modeling for tear fracture and its impact on the mechanical behavior of artificial tissues used in soft robotics. Experimental validation shows that artificial tissues have inherent anisotropic behavior, and the tear fracture model investigates the effects of physical parameters. The findings suggest that stretch gradient significantly affects the tear position during a gradual transition.

Static and dynamic instability modeling of electro-magneto-active polymers with various entanglements and crosslinks

Aman Khurana et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electro-magneto-mechanical instability phenomena of electro-magneto-active (EMA) polymer-based smart actuators in both static and dynamic modes of operation. The findings suggest that increasing the entanglements and crosslinks in polymer chains can improve the stable operation of the actuator.

Constitutive modeling for the tear fracture of rubber with filler particles

Sankalp Gour et al.

Summary: This study presents a constitutive model for the tear fracture behavior of rubber filled with filler particles, and validates the model using experimental results. The focus is on the trousers test of mode-III fracture, and the results show that the fracture toughness of the filled rubber increases with the volume of filler particles. The developed model has implications for characterizing the behavior of rubber-like materials such as tires.

Constitutive modeling of particle reinforced rubber-like materials

Sankalp Gour et al.

Summary: The present study focuses on the constitutive modeling for the mechanical behavior of rubber reinforced with filler particles. A filler-dependent energy density function is proposed with the necessary requirements of an effective hyperelastic material model based on continuum mechanics. The model solution agrees well with existing experimental results and the effect of varying concentrations of filler particles in the rubber matrix is also studied.

Modeling and analysis of an electro-pneumatic braided muscle actuator

Deepak Kumar et al.

Summary: The present study focuses on the static modeling and analysis of a novel electro-pneumatic braided muscle (EPBM) actuator, developing a continuum mechanics-based electromechanical model to predict the actuator's response to combined pressure and voltage loading, including braid-to-braid frictional effects. Parametric studies are conducted on varying braid angle, input pressure, and voltage, and the impact of fiber-reinforcement in the bladder on actuator performance is also studied using the model.

Nonlinear Oscillations of Particle-Reinforced Electro-Magneto-Viscoelastomer Actuators

Aman Khurana et al.

Summary: This study presents the dynamic modeling and analysis of a smart actuator, using an energy-based model to predict its response and investigate the impact of particle reinforcement on dynamic oscillations. The findings show that particle reinforcement enhances the polymer, reduces deformation, decreases oscillation intensity, and increases excitation frequency.
