Engineering microstructure toward split-free mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers

Huang Wu et al.

Summary: High alignment of graphene in mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers can provide excellent properties, but the weak interlayer interaction between large planar molecules leads to unwanted cracks in circular carbon fibers, resulting in low strain-to-failure and low utilization rate in composite manufacturing. In this study, a die swell manipulating strategy was employed to address this problem, and split-free circular carbon fibers with high molecular alignment were successfully produced.
