Multi-material additive manufacturing of a bio-inspired layered ceramic/metal structure: Formation mechanisms and mechanical properties

Rui Wang et al.

Summary: This research reveals the mechanisms of material densification, element diffusion, interfacial reaction, crystal growth, and performance enhancement in multi-material laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) through experiments and simulations. Fully dense multi-material parts with strong metallurgical bonding and gradually changing microhardness at the interface were achieved by optimizing the printing parameters. The laser printed TiB2/Ti6Al4V multi-material parts exhibited excellent flexural performance with improved strength and ductility. This study is significant for the manufacturing and strengthening of ceramic/metal multi-material using laser additive manufacturing technology.

Effects of Annealing and Solution Treatments on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Ti6Al4V Manufactured by Selective Laser Melting

Hassanen Jaber et al.

Summary: This research investigated the effect of heat treatment parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of SLM Ti64 structure. It was found that heat treatment can improve the tensile strength and ductility of SLM-manufactured Ti64 alloys. The optimal combination of ductility and tensile strength was achieved through heat treatment at 850 degrees C followed by furnace cooling.

Enhanced strength-ductility synergy in laser additive manufactured TC4 titanium alloy by grain refinement

Xiaotong Pang et al.

Summary: The addition of ZrB2 through laser melting deposition can refine the prior-beta grains in the TC4 titanium alloy, resulting in a fine basket-weave structure. The mechanical anisotropy of the modified-TC4 alloys decreases with the increase of ZrB2 content. The alloy with 0.5 wt% ZrB2 addition shows an excellent combination of strength and ductility, with isotropic characteristics.

Deformation strengthening mechanism of in situ TiC/TC4 alloy nanocomposites produced by selective laser melting

Pengcheng Huo et al.

Summary: In this study, TiC/TC4 alloy nanocomposites were successfully fabricated using the selective laser melting (SLM) process, and the deformation strengthening mechanism of Ti matrix reinforced with TiC nanoparticles was investigated in depth. The results showed that nanoscale TiC reinforcement promoted the formation of deformation twinning, maintaining an orderly arrangement of atoms in the TiC/TC4 alloy nanocomposites during deformation. Additionally, a dual strengthening mechanism involving severe lattice distortion and deformation twinning was proposed to describe the occurrence of dislocation pinning effects.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of in-situ Ti6Al4V-TiB composites manufactured by selective laser melting

Zhiguang Zhou et al.

Summary: In situ TiB reinforced titanium matrix composites were fabricated via selective laser melting, with optimized processing to achieve crack-free and fully dense composites. The distribution of TiB reinforcement in the composites was mainly in the form of whisker clusters, showing different distributions in TMC1 and TMC2. The improvement in mechanical properties of the composites was attributed to Hall-Petch strengthening and load-bearing transformation strengthening.

In-situ laser additive manufacturing of Ti6Al4V matrix composites by gas-liquid reaction in dilute nitrogen gas atmospheres

Wenhou Wei et al.

Summary: A novel method for laser additive manufacturing of in-situ synthesized TiN and AlN co-reinforced Ti6Al4V matrix composites in low-concentration N-2 atmospheres is developed in this study. The formation of the composites involves reactions between decomposed nitrogen, molten Ti6Al4V, and nitrides layer-by-layer. The resulting nanoscale reinforcements exhibit good dispersion and strong interfacial bonding, leading to significantly increased microhardness and compressive strength of the composites.

The microstructures and mechanical properties of martensite Ti and TiN phases in a Ti6Al4V laser-assisted nitriding layer

Penglin Zhang et al.

Summary: The research finds that the nano-hardness of the TiN phase is 2609 HV with an elastic modulus of 208 GPa, while the nano-hardness of alpha '-Ti is 632 HV with an elastic modulus of 142.8 GPa. The entanglement of two sets of parallel dislocations in alpha'-Ti crystals forms subgrain boundaries, exerting a positive influence on work hardening and fine-grain strengthening. During the TiN dendritic fracture process, a crack-toughening mechanism occurs with primary dendrites undergoing near ductile fracture along the growth direction of secondary dendrites.
