Experimental characterization and phenomenological modeling of nonlinear viscoelasticity, plasticity and damage of continuous carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastics

Christian Andriss et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the experimental characterization and phenomenological modeling of the complex rate dependent mechanical response of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastics (cFRTP). The mechanical response is decomposed into a rate dependent overstress and a rate independent equilibrium stress using the concept of an equilibrium curve. Relaxation tests are shown to have advantages over creep tests in determining the equilibrium response. A stepwise loading-unloading relaxation (SR) test is proposed to extract nonlinear viscoelasticity, damage, and plasticity from a single test. The proposed method is exemplified in the experimental characterization of a continuous carbon fiber-reinforced polycarbonate (CF-PC), and a phenomenological material model is developed based on the obtained experimental data.

A multiscale finite element model for prediction of tensile strength of concrete

Peng Yu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a 3D multiscale model for predicting the tensile strength of concrete. The microstructure of Hydrated Cement Paste (HCP) is generated and exported to Abaqus using a Python program. The local background grid method is used to directly generate the meso-scale models of mortar and concrete, and an uncoupled multiscale method is applied to transfer parameters between different scale models. The accuracy of the multiscale model is verified through experimental tests.

Bifurcation buckling and the effect of imperfections on the microbuckling of soft materials with periodic microstructure by the finite strain HFGMC micromechanics

Jacob Aboudi et al.

Summary: Two approaches are proposed to predict the microbuckling of composites under compressive loading and large deformations. The first approach uses the finite strain high-fidelity generalized method of cells (HFGMC) for predicting the ideal bifurcation buckling stress. The second approach adopts a perturbation expansion to consider composites with imperfections, and solves zero and first-order problems using the finite strain HFGMC micromechanics.

Hard-magnetic phenomena enable autonomous self-healing elastomers

Daniel Garcia-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new concept of self-healing soft material that can heal after rupture without external actuation. By filling a sticky and soft elastomeric matrix with hard-magnetic particles, the material can close cracks when the ruptured parts are approached to each other. Experimental results show that the proposed soft materials can sustain mechanical loading beyond 20% strains after several fracture cycles without compromising the structural integrity.

Mechanical instability tuning of a magnetorheological elastomer composite laminate

Vincent W. Chen et al.

Summary: Magnetorheological elastomers (MRE) have the ability to change shape and properties under the influence of an external magnetic field. This study investigates the buckling behavior of a composite system consisting of a magnetoactive layer embedded into an inactive elastomeric matrix. The critical buckling strain is highly tunable by the applied magnetic field and the composite exhibits well-developed controllable wavy patterns in the post-buckling regime.

Post-buckling development in soft particulate composites

Dean Chen et al.

Summary: In this paper, the post-buckling development of instability-induced patterns in soft particulate composites is investigated. Microstructural buckling occurs when the composite reaches the critical strain level. Interestingly, the initial buckling mode may evolve into different new patterns in the post-buckling regime, which are determined by the initial microstructure parameters. The different post-buckling patterns are further characterized using the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) analysis, and the results show that they can evolve into complex new shapes beyond simple deformation amplification.

Band gap tuning through microscopic instabilities of compressively loaded lightened nacre-like composite metamaterials

Andrea Pranno et al.

Summary: This study investigates the wave propagation properties and instability phenomena at the microscopic and macroscopic scales in bioinspired composite metamaterials subjected to uniaxial loading. By analyzing the propagation of elastic waves in a deformed state, the dynamic response of a new microstructure containing periodically arranged cavities is studied. The results show that the prestress state strongly affects the elastic wave propagation and offers opportunities for designing periodic bioinspired composite metamaterials with wave absorption capabilities.

Summary: Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are promising multifunctional composites with the ability to respond to external magnetic fields, making them ideal for soft robotics and bioengineering applications. Macro- and micro-instabilities in incompressible bioinspired composite materials with nacre-like microstructure

Fabrizio Greco et al.

Summary: The study examines the interchange between macro- and micro-instabilities in 2D incompressible nacre-like composite materials induced by uniaxial loadings. It is found that the critical instability mode shapes, load factors, and wavelengths are highly influenced by the microscopic geometrical arrangement and material composition, with out-of-phase instability mode shapes occurring at significantly higher magnitudes of homogenized energy compared to in-phase ones. This indicates that accurate and efficient instability prediction can be obtained based on the loss of strong ellipticity condition of the homogenized incremental moduli tensor.
