Disclosing residual thermal stresses in UHT fibre-reinforced ceramic composites and their effect on mechanical behaviour and damage evolution

Pietro Galizia et al.

Summary: The impact of residual thermal stresses (RTS) on the reusability of CMCs with high-temperature capabilities and ablation resistance was studied. The RTS of ZrB2-SiC ceramic reinforced with carbon fibers was found to depend on fiber anisotropy and fiber coating. Microstructural analysis revealed the presence of residual porosity, cracks, porosity within fiber bundles, volumetric content of the fibers, and degree of dispersion. The level of RTS was determined by comparing stiffness-displacement curves and cyclic dilatometric curves, and its correlation with thermomechanical behavior was evaluated through flexural tests.

In situ tomographic study of a 3D-woven SiC/SiC composite part subjected to severe thermo-mechanical loads

Leonard Turpin et al.

Summary: In this study, a high-temperature multi-axial test was conducted to characterize the thermomechanical behavior of a 3D-woven SiC/SiC composite aeronautical part. The results showed that the mesostructure had an influence on fracture phenomena under realistic operating conditions.

Numerical modeling of 3D woven composite reinforcements: A review

Yanneck Wielhorski et al.

Summary: The literature on numerical modeling of 3D woven composite reinforcements has seen a wide range of studies in the last two decades, with two distinct strategies emerging: predictive approaches involving mechanical constructions and numerical simulations, and descriptive approaches focusing on extracting real textile geometry. Different strategies have been employed for yarn behavior modeling at different scales, with a proposed common terminology for organizing and discussing strategies.

Coupling tomographic and thermographic measurements for in-situ thermo-mechanical tests

Leonard Turpin et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental method and full-field measurement procedure for determining the thermo-mechanical properties of complex 3D woven ceramic composite materials, capturing 3D tomographic images of the sample at different loading stages and mapping the thermal field onto a 3D mesh using a pin-hole projective model. An integrated digital image correlation algorithm is proposed to calibrate the projection model, with a focus on the silhouette of the sample shape. The procedure is illustrated with an experimental case study.

Multiscale characterization and representation of variability in ceramic matrix composites

Khaled H. Khafagy et al.

Summary: This paper presents a detailed characterization study of structural and manufacturing flaws in Carbon fiber Silicon-Carbide-Nitride matrix (C/SiNC) CMCs at different length-scales, using various analytical methods. An image processing algorithm and a three-dimensional stochastic representative volume element (SRVE) generation algorithm were developed to accurately quantify architectural parameters variability and provide precise material texture representations at multiple length scales. The developed algorithm accurately accounts for material features and flaws based on a range of multiscale structural and defects characterization results.
