In this paper, an improved equivalent method is proposed for predicting the axial compression stiffness and strength of one dimensional (1D) lattice IsoTruss column structures. The traditional method neglects the contribution of pyramidal elements in calculating the axial stiffness. In this research, the cylindrical shell is transformed into a plane lattice structure and the contribution of helical members is fully considered. The theoretical predictions of the improved method are compared to finite element modeling (FEM) calculations, and the error is within 1%, indicating a significant improvement in accuracy.
In this paper, an improved equivalent method for one dimensional (1D) lattice IsoTruss column structures was developed to predict the axial compression stiffness and strength. Traditionally, the pyramidal elements were neglected in calculating the axial stiffness of the structure. In this research, the cylindrical shell is expanded into a plane lattice structure and the contribution of helical members is completely included. Theoretical predictions of the improved model and traditional model were compared with finite element modeling (FEM) calculations. The error of the improved method is within 1%. It is clear that the improved method is much more accurate.
