The anomaly that was not meant IIB

Arun Debray et al.

Summary: This paper explores the quantum anomalies in Type IIB supergravity, finding that they can be cancelled through subtle modifications of the standard 10d Chern-Simons term or via a topological analog of the Green-Schwarz mechanism. These alternative IIB theories share the same low energy supergravity limit as the standard theory but have a different spectrum of extended objects.

Liberating confinement from Lagrangians: 1-form symmetries and lines in 4D N = 1 from 6D N = (2, 0)

Lakshya Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: This study focuses on confinement in 4d N = 1 theories obtained by deforming 4d N = 2 theories of Class S. The researchers argue that confinement in a vacuum of the N = 1 theory can be encoded in the 1-cycles of the associated N = 1 curve. They reproduce the expected properties of confinement in classic examples and provide tools for probing confinement in non-Lagrangian N = 1 theories.

2-Group symmetries and their classification in 6d

Fabio Apruzzi et al.

Summary: We investigate the 2-group symmetries in 6d superconformal field theories, which arise from the mixing between the discrete 1-form symmetry and continuous flavor symmetry group. By applying the approach that is applicable more generally, we classify all 6d superconformal field theories with such 2-group symmetries and discuss the dimension-independent aspects of the analysis. We also provide a mathematical code for computing 2-group symmetries once the dimension specific input is provided.

5D and 6D SCFTs from C3 orbifolds

Jiahua Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigates orbifold singularities X = C-3/Gamma, where Gamma is a finite subgroup of SU (3). The M-theory on this orbifold singularity gives rise to a 5d SCFT, which is explored using two different methods. The first method involves the 3d McKay correspondence, which relates the group theoretic data of Gamma to the properties of the 5d SCFT. The second method involves explicitly resolving the singularity X and studying the Coulomb branch information of the 5d SCFT. Several new theories are constructed, some with IR quiver gauge theory descriptions and some without. Additionally, certain cases of Gamma can be embedded in an elliptic model and give rise to a 6d (1,0) SCFT in F-theory construction.

2-Group Symmetries of 6D Little String Theories and T-Duality

Michele Del Zotto et al.

Summary: The 2-group structure constants of six-dimensional little string theories (LSTs) engineered in F-theory without frozen singularities were determined and used as a consistency check for T-duality. The matching of 2-groups for a pair of T-dual LSTs is demonstrated, with modifications made when T-duality involves a discrete symmetry twist.

Coulomb and Higgs branches from canonical singularities. Part 0

Cyril Closset et al.

Summary: This paper mainly discusses the five-dimensional and four-dimensional superconformal field theories arising from canonical threefold singularities in M-theory and Type IIB string theory. It studies their Coulomb and Higgs branches, and proposes a relation between the resulting moduli spaces through compactification, mirror symmetry, and gauging. By applying this framework, it determines the Higgs branches of some 5d SCFTs and their magnetic quivers. Finally, it also computes the higher-form symmetries of the 4d and 5d SCFTs.

Higher-form symmetries of 6d and 5d theories

Lakshya Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: The paper describes general methods for determining higher-form symmetry groups of known 5d and 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) and 6d little string theories (LSTs). It delves into the complexity and subtleties arising from the interaction of BPS excitations and gauge group centers in describing the 1-form symmetry of these theories. Furthermore, it discusses ways to determine the 2-form symmetry group of 6d theories using the Green-Schwarz coupling associated with the theory.

Anomaly inflow methods for SCFT constructions in type IIB

Ibrahima Bah et al.

Summary: The authors extend anomaly inflow methods from M-theory to SCFTs engineered via D3-branes in type IIB. They demonstrate that the 't Hooft anomalies of these SCFTs can be systematically computed from their geometric definition. The procedure is tested in several 4d examples and applied to 2d theories obtained by wrapping D3-branes on a Riemann surface.

Discrete and higher-form symmetries in SCFTs from wrapped M5-branes

Ibrahima Bah et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the topological mass terms of BF type in supersymmetric M-theory compactifications to AdS(5) and discusses the dual field theories with distinct global discrete symmetries resulting from different choices of boundary conditions for the BF terms. It provides a detailed discussion on the 't Hooft anomalies for 4d N = 1 SCFTs arising from M5-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface without punctures, including theories from M5-branes at a DOUBLE-STRUCK CAPITAL Z(2) orbifold singularity. The anomaly polynomial computation through inflow reveals background fields for discrete global 0-, 1-, and 2-form symmetries, continuous 0-form symmetries, and axionic background fields properly interpreted in the context of anomalies in the space of coupling constants.

Instantons, symmetries and anomalies in five dimensions

Pietro Benetti Genolini et al.

Summary: This study reveals a finite-order mixed 't Hooft anomaly in five-dimensional non-abelian gauge theories, as well as an obstruction to coupling the U(1) global symmetry with a classical background gauge field associated with a one-form center symmetry. A similar obstruction is found to occur in gauge theories with fundamental matter. Furthermore, the general dynamical properties of the candidate phases implied by the anomaly are explored.

Summary: The study of six-dimensional quantum field theories reveals the presence of mixed anomalies in little string theories but their absence in SCFTs. This discovery provides an algorithm for computing the 't Hooft anomalies of most SCFTs. Furthermore, it is proven that the a-type Weyl anomaly of all SCFTs with a tensor branch must be positive.

Summary: In this series of papers, a general method for determining the flavor symmetry of 5d SCFTs has been described and applied to explicitly determine the flavor symmetry of those 5d SCFTs. When these 5d SCFTs reduce to 5dN = 1 gauge theories upon a mass deformation, their flavor symmetry is often enhanced at the conformal point.

Summary: This paper studies reductions of 6d theories on a d-dimensional manifold, focusing on the interplay between symmetries, anomalies, and dynamics in the resulting (6 -d)-dimensional theory. The refined notion of polarization on the manifold serves to determine the spectrum of operators in T[M-d], which often possess higher-group symmetries. Further investigations include analyzing physical implications such as symmetry breaking and enhancement in the renormalization group flow.

Non-invertible global symmetries and completeness of the spectrum

Ben Heidenreich et al.

Summary: It is believed that consistent theories of quantum gravity can be restored by broadening the concept of symmetry to include non-invertible topological operators, and the absence of these operators is sufficient to guarantee a complete spectrum for any compact, possibly disconnected gauge group. In addition, the completeness of twist vortices defined by a discrete holonomy around their worldvolume has also been proven.

Holography, 1-form symmetries, and confinement

Fabio Apruzzi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on confinement in 4d N = 1 SU(N) Super-Yang Mills theory, with an emphasis on the 1-form symmetry and its relation to chiral symmetry breaking. By examining the topological couplings in the 5d truncation of the Klebanov-Strassler solution, the determination of the 1-form symmetry and its 't Hooft anomalies is identified. The research also reveals an infrared 4d topological field theory that realizes chiral symmetry breaking and matches the mixed anomaly, shedding light on the connection between different symmetries in the theory.

5d and 4d SCFTs: canonical singularities, trinions and S-dualities

Cyril Closset et al.

Summary: Canonical hypersurface singularities in M-theory and Type IIB string theory lead to 5d and 4d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), respectively. This paper focuses on a specific class of 'trinion' singularities in Type IIB, which give rise to 4d N = 2 SCFTs known as Dpb(G)-trinions. Reducing these 4d and 5d SCFTs to 3d N = 4 theories helps determine their electric and magnetic quivers.
