Simultaneous removal of Arsenic(III) and Chromium(VI) over ZnFe2O4 {100}/{111} Z-scheme photocatalyst: Facet-dependent active site and overlooked As(III)/Cr(VI) complex

Dashi Lei et al.

Summary: In this study, a ZnFe2O4 {100}/{111} facet Z-scheme photocatalyst was used for simultaneous removal of As(III) and Cr(VI) in wastewater. The {100} plane was found to produce center dot OH and Fe(II) through ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) under light irradiation. Fe(II) and electrons were responsible for Cr(VI) reduction, while As(III) oxidation was attributed to holes and center dot OH. The complexation between As(III) and Cr(VI) was proposed and confirmed, leading to enhanced removal efficiency.

A novel insight into the microwave induced catalytic reduction mechanism in aqueous Cr(VI) removal over ZnFe2O4 catalyst

Gaoqian Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, a sphere-like ZnFe2O4 catalyst was prepared and it was found that aqueous Cr(VI) pollution can be completely removed within a short time by using microwave irradiation. Surface temperature visualization tests and simulations showed that the high surface temperature of ZnFe2O4 catalysts induced by microwave irradiation played a crucial role in the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The DFT calculation further clarified the kinetic reaction process and demonstrated that Fe atoms in the ZnFe2O4 catalysts were more significant for the reduction reaction than Zn and O atoms.

Sulfur vacancies-induced Electron Bridge in Ni4Mo/Sv-ZnxCd1-xS regulates electron transfer for efficient H2-releasing photocatalysis

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: Through a defect-induced heterojunction constructing strategy, Ni4Mo alloys were grown on sulfur vacancies-rich ZCS via interfacial Ni-S covalent bonds, resulting in enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate and stability. The unsaturated sulfur atoms induced by sulfur vacancies facilitate the anchoring of Ni-Mo nanoparticles and the formation of abundant Ni-S covalent bonds, enabling efficient photoelectron transfer and activation of water molecules. The optimized Ni4Mo/Sv-ZCS composite exhibits significantly higher PHE rate compared to Pt/ZCS and Ni4Mo/ZCS, indicating the potential of constructing sulfur vacancies and covalent bonds as an electron bridge to enhance PHE activity.

Summary: The generation of Cr intermediates and their oxidizability in the photocatalytic conversion of Cr(VI) and organic contaminants were emphasized in this study. It was found that the reduction of Cr(VI) indeed promotes the photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA). The presence of the Cr(V) intermediate was confirmed through electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, and its oxidation played a crucial role in the degradation of BPA. Density functional theory calculations showed that photogenerated electrons can facilitate the conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(V), which contributes to the subsequent oxidation step for BPA degradation.
