The mechanisms involved into the inhibitory effects of ionic liquids chemistry on adsorption performance of ciprofloxacin onto inorganic minerals

Jiuyan Chen et al.

Summary: This study confirms that ionic liquids can inhibit the adsorption of ciprofloxacin on ferrihydrite and montmorillonite, and elucidates the mechanisms involved, including competition for adsorption sites between ions and antibiotics, steric hindrance caused by the alkyl chains of the ionic liquids, and electrostatic interactions.

Antibiotic adsorption by natural and modified clay minerals as designer adsorbents for wastewater treatment: A comprehensive review

Gill Gillenay Haciosmanoglu et al.

Summary: Increased antibiotic use worldwide has caused concerns due to their health and environmental impacts. This paper reviews the recent progress in using natural and modified clay minerals as efficient and cost-effective adsorbents for the removal of antibiotics from water. The characteristics of clay minerals as adsorbents and the factors affecting the adsorption are explored, along with future trends and strategies to increase their adsorption capacity. The paper also discusses the application of these adsorbents at pilot scale and other related issues such as reuse, economic analysis, and life cycle assessment.

Fish farming, metals and antibiotics in the eastern Mediterranean Sea: Is there a threat to sediment wildlife?

Ioanna Kalantzi et al.

Summary: This study assessed the pollution status of marine sediments near aquaculture farms in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, finding that most elements originated from geological sources. The potential ecological risk of certain metals close to fish cages was low, except for Cd in some sampled fish farms. Antibiotics were found to be rare in sediments below fish farms in this region.

Ionic Liquid-Functionalized Magnetic Metal-Organic Framework Nanocomposites for Efficient Extraction and Sensitive Detection of Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics in Environmental Water

Dingkun Lu et al.

Summary: A novel water-stable IL-COOH/Fe3O4@Zr-MOF nanocomposite was synthesized for the selective adsorption and detection of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, with IL-COOH/Fe3O4@UiO-67-bpydc showing the best adsorption performance. Coupled magnetic solid-phase extraction with HPLC-DAD was developed as a convenient, sensitive, and efficient method for extraction and detection of FQs in environmental water, with recoveries ranging from 90.0 to 110.0% and detection limits lower than 0.02 μg L-1.

Mechanistic interaction of ciprofloxacin on zeolite modified seaweed (Sargassum crassifolium) derived biochar: Kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics

Thilakshani Atugoda et al.

Summary: Modification of biochar with zeolite improved the adsorption capacity for antibiotics removal from water, with SWBC-Z showing the highest adsorption capacity of 93.65 mg g(-1) for ciprofloxacin. The experiments confirmed the chemisorption and physisorption interactions on the biochar surface, and the FTIR analysis and electron microscopy supported the incorporation of zeolite minerals into the modified biochar. Thermodynamic data indicated a spontaneous and exothermic reaction between ciprofloxacin and both biochars, showing the enhanced overall adsorption performance of SWBC-Z.

Mitigation of levofloxacin from aqueous media by adsorption: a review

Kingsley O. Iwuozor et al.

Summary: This paper reviewed the research findings on the removal of levofloxacin (LEV) from aqueous media via adsorption over the past two decades. The study found that modified carbon-based adsorbents are the best for LEV uptake, with mechanisms including pi-pi interactions, electrostatic interactions, complexation, and hydrogen bonds. The research also highlighted the impact of salt competing species on the uptake of LEV.

Insight into the inhibitory mechanism of soluble ionic liquids on the transport of TiO2 nanoparticles in saturated porous media: Roles of alkyl chain lengths and counteranion types

Yumeng Song et al.

Summary: The study found that the influence of imidazolium-based ionic liquids on the transport of TiO2 nanoparticles depended on the species, alkyl chain length, and counteranions. The inhibitory effects were mainly controlled by the hydrophobicity of the ILs and electrostatic repulsion between nanoparticles and porous media. Additionally, the inhibitory role of ILs was more pronounced under acidic conditions compared to alkaline conditions.
