Oculometric Indicators of Individual Differences in Preparatory Control During the Antisaccade Task

Summary: This study examined individual differences in preparatory control in the antisaccade task. The results showed that high attention control individuals demonstrated larger pupillary responses during the preparatory delay than low attention control individuals. Additionally, fixation stability, working memory capacity, susceptibility to off-task thinking, and task-specific motivation were found to correlate with antisaccade performance.

Baseline pupil diameter does not correlate with fluid intelligence

Summary: There has been debate about the correlation between baseline/resting state measures of pupil diameter and cognitive abilities. While a positive correlation has been suggested, recent replication attempts have failed. The current studies also find evidence against a positive correlation between pupil diameter and intelligence. Therefore, it is concluded that baseline pupil diameter should not be used as evidence for the role of the LC-NE system in cognitive activity.

Methods in cognitive pupillometry: Design, preprocessing, and statistical analysis

Individual Differences in Working Memory Capacity, Attention Control Fluid Intelligence, and Pupillary Measures of Arousal

Summary: The present study examined individual differences in attention control, working memory capacity, and fluid intelligence in relation to the tendency to experience task-unrelated thoughts and the regulation of arousal. The results showed that participants who reported more task-unrelated thoughts exhibited poorer attention control, lower working memory capacity, and lower fluid intelligence. Arousal dysregulation was correlated with more task-unrelated thoughts and lower attention control. However, there was no direct correlation between arousal regulation and working memory capacity or fluid intelligence. The association between arousal regulation and fluid intelligence was indirect through the mediating influence of task-unrelated thoughts.

Pupillary correlates of individual differences in long-term memory

An examination of relations between baseline pupil measures and cognitive abilities

Summary: Examining individual differences in pupil size and pupillary dynamics has provided valuable insights into cognitive abilities such as working memory capacity, long-term memory, attention control, and fluid intelligence. The locus coeruleus-norepinephrine (LC-NE) system is often associated with these findings as it has a strong correlation with pupil diameter. Recent research has indicated a positive correlation between resting pupil size and cognitive ability, particularly fluid intelligence. However, the present study failed to replicate these findings, suggesting the need for further replication studies before drawing strong theoretical conclusions about the relationship between resting pupil measures and cognitive abilities.

Readiness to remember: predicting variability in episodic memory

Apart from preparatory processes before learning and encoding and retrieval during memory, evidence suggests that preparatory processes before retrieval attempts also significantly influence memory success or failure. This article reviews recent research in neuroimaging, electroencephalography, pupillometry, and behavioral science to propose an integrative framework that explains variances in remembering in the moment and across individuals.
