Absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of apigenin and its glycosides in healthy male adults

Gina Borges et al.

Summary: The bioavailability of apigenin and its O-glycosides in humans was investigated. Different metabolites were identified in urine samples after intake of apigenin compounds. The absorption of apigenin depended on the type of glycoside and gastrointestinal tract location. The study provided valuable information on the excretion of apigenin metabolites and intra-individual variations.

Pharmacological inactivation of the prion protein by targeting a folding intermediate

Giovanni Spagnolli et al.

Summary: The researchers introduced a new drug discovery approach called Pharmacological Protein Inactivation by Folding Intermediate Targeting (PPI-FIT), which targets folding intermediates of disease-causing proteins. Testing this approach on the cellular prion protein, they identified ligands that could stabilize a folding intermediate and promote its degradation, supporting the idea that modulating protein levels by acting on their folding pathways may have therapeutic potential. Moreover, recent computational advancements in simulating biochemical processes have allowed for investigating protein regulation mechanisms with realistic physics-based models at an atomistic level.

Polyphenols in the Mediterranean Diet: From Dietary Sources to microRNA Modulation

Roberto Cannataro et al.

Summary: Polyphenols, a class of natural substances known for their health benefits, are present in varying quantities and types in all plants. This study focuses on discussing some specific polyphenols found in Mediterranean foods, such as Naringenin, Apigenin, Kaempferol, Hesperidin, Ellagic Acid, and Oleuropein, exploring their dietary sources, chemistry, pharmacokinetics, and potential as nutraceuticals/supplements, as well as their ability to modulate microRNAs expression profiles.

Does Oral Apigenin Have Real Potential for a Therapeutic Effect in the Context of Human Gastrointestinal and Other Cancers?

Eva F. DeRango-Adem et al.

Summary: Apigenin is a plant flavone that may have beneficial interactions with chemotherapeutic drugs and could potentially reach target blood levels when taken orally in semi-purified form. Further studies are needed to fully evaluate its clinical potential, particularly in gastrointestinal disorders such as colorectal cancer.

Effects of physical exercise on plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor in neurodegenerative disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

David Ruiz-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Exercise interventions significantly increase plasma BDNF levels in individuals with neurodegenerative disorders, with particularly notable effects in multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease; irrespective of exercise type, weekly exercise volume, and intervention length, BDNF levels showed significant increases.

Luteolin stimulates the NGF-induced neurite outgrowth in cultured PC12 cells through binding with NGF and potentiating its receptor signaling

Alex Xiong Gao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that luteolin can directly interact with nerve growth factor (NGF), enhancing NGF-induced neuronal differentiation and neurofilament expression in cultured PC12 cells. The co-treatment also activated key signaling pathways involved in neuronal growth, mimicking the effects of a high dose of NGF. These findings support the potential development of luteolin as a therapeutic agent for NGF insufficiency-related neurodegenerative diseases.
