Deep reinforcement learning-based multi-objective edge server placement in Internet of Vehicles

Jiawei Lu et al.

Summary: In the typical scenario of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), edge servers (ESs) are strategically placed near road side units (RSUs) to process real-time data for various IoV services. Improper distribution of ESs can lead to workload imbalance and reduced quality of service (QoS). To address this challenge, a deep reinforcement learning-based multi-objective strategy named DESP is explored. It aims to enhance coverage rate, workload balancing, and reduce average task completion delay in the IoV. The DESP utilizes Deep Q-Network (DQN) and formulates the ES placement problem as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) to obtain the optimal placement scheme. An assessment of DESP's effectiveness is performed using a real vehicular dataset.
