Summary: The brain has the ability to shift its gears between wakefulness and sleep, with information processing and behavior dominating in wakefulness and homeostatic functions prevailing during sleep. The brain relies on the glymphatic system, a fluid system comprised of the cerebrospinal fluid and perivascular spaces formed by astrocytic vascular endfeet, to clear waste products and maintain homeostasis. This system is especially active during sleep, driven by the cardiac cycle, respiration, and slow vasomotion.

Summary: Sepsis associated encephalopathy can lead to cognitive impairment or loss of cognitive function, and the neurochemical basis of this condition is not clearly defined. This study evaluated the differential neurochemical sequelae in response to sepsis in two strains of mice. The results showed that BALB/c mice exhibited more severe sickness behavior and immune response, as well as greater changes in neurotransmitter metabolism. These findings suggest the need for further research on the neurotransmitter changes in septic encephalopathy and whether altered peripheral kynurenine metabolism can serve as a blood-based biomarker for sepsis.

The results suggest that Leo can reduce oxidative stress and neuronal apoptosis caused by cerebral ischemia, and it could be a potential agent for intervention of ischemic stroke.
