Improving Symptom Management for Survivors of Young Adult Cancer: Development of a Novel Intervention

Summary: Effective symptom management is crucial for young adult cancer survivors, with pain, fatigue, and distress identified as top concerns. A tailored behavioral symptom management program was developed based on feedback from survivors and providers, combining traditional coping skills, physical activity, and strategies from different therapeutic approaches. The program will be further refined and evaluated in a pilot randomized controlled trial.

The findings showed that emotional distress was more prevalent among young adult cancer survivors than middle/older adult survivors. However, there was no difference in emotional distress between young adult cancer survivors and the general population without cancer.

Development and initial testing of TOGETHER-YA: an eHealth-delivered and group-based psychosocial intervention for young adult cancer survivors

Summary: This study developed TOGETHER-YA, an e-Health intervention for young adult cancer survivors, and tested its feasibility and acceptability in a pilot trial. TOGETHER-YA is a 10-week intervention that includes relaxation training, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and health education. The study found that TOGETHER-YA met feasibility and acceptability benchmarks, and received positive feedback from participants. It is the first HRQOL intervention delivered through e-Health and group-based support for a broad range of young adult survivors.
