Summary: This study found that offspring of rats with maternal diabetes exhibit high blood pressure and endothelial dysfunction, which is associated with increased ER stress and down-regulation of the AMPK/PPAR delta signaling cascade. The aberrant changes in these offspring can be reversed by inhibiting ER stress and treating with AMPK/PPAR delta agonists.

Activation of AMPK/miR-181b Axis Alleviates Endothelial Dysfunction and Vascular Inflammation in Diabetic Mice

Summary: This study found that the level of miR-181b is decreased in renal arteries of diabetic patients and in advanced glycation end products (AGEs)-treated renal arteries of non-diabetic patients. Transfection of miR-181b mimics can improve endothelium-dependent vasodilation in arteries of diabetic mice. Activation of AMPK and chronic exercise can upregulate miR-181b expression. These findings suggest a critical role of the AMPK/miR-181b axis in counteracting diabetes-associated endothelial dysfunction.
