South America climate change revealed through climate indices projected by GCMs and Eta-RCM ensembles

Michelle Simoes Reboita et al.

Summary: This study evaluates climate projections for South America using climate indices, showing an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events in the southern summer and winter in the future, with more intense climate change signals in vulnerable regions such as the Amazon, northeastern Brazil, and southeastern South America.

Projecting climate change in South America using variable-resolution Community Earth System Model: An application to Chile

Nicolas E. Bambach et al.

Summary: The study introduced variable-resolution enabled Community Earth System Model (VR-CESM) results simulating historical and future climate conditions in South America and the Andes. The findings showed broad warming patterns and heterogeneous precipitation responses in South America by the end of the century, consistent with prior modelling efforts.

Assessment of CMIP6 Performance and Projected Temperature and Precipitation Changes Over South America

Mansour Almazroui et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the performance of CMIP6 GCMs over South America and finds that they capture the main climate characteristics well, but exhibit varying skill in the spatiotemporal distribution of precipitation and temperature. Future projections suggest decreasing precipitation in some areas and increasing temperatures overall. Results indicate a more intense hydrological cycle as greenhouse gas emissions increase over time.

Assessment of the RegCM4 Performance in Simulating the Surface Radiation Budget and Hydrologic Balance Variables in South America

David Pareja-Quispe et al.

Summary: The Regional Climate Model v4 (RegCM4) has been evaluated for its ability to simulate surface radiation budget and hydrological balance variables over South America. Results show that while RegCM4 captures the main patterns, there are overestimations in cloudiness and surface radiation budget variables, along with some differences in hydrological balance. Despite deficiencies, RegCM4 may still be a useful tool for climate studies.

Validation of a 9-km WRF dynamical downscaling of temperature and precipitation for the period 1980-2005 over Central South Chile

Alfonso Fernandez et al.

Summary: This study evaluated a dynamical downscaling for Central South Chile in relation to climatic conditions between 1980 and 2005. The results indicated that the dynamical downscaling adequately reproduced spatial and temporal features of the climate in the region, with biases observed in temperature and precipitation.

Summary: The use of regional climate model (RCM) projections in providing regional climate information is expanding rapidly, particularly in Europe. While model simulations generally agree with observations and reanalyses, there are systematic biases identified related to temperature, precipitation, and dynamical variables.

Extreme daily precipitation in southern South America: statistical characterization and circulation types using observational datasets and regional climate models

Summary: This study evaluated and compared daily extreme precipitation and circulation types in southern South America using multiple observational datasets and simulations from regional climate models during 1980-2010. The results showed differences in the intensity and spatial distribution of extreme events among observational datasets and models, highlighting the uncertainty in evaluating precipitation extremes at a daily scale.
