Association between regional summer monsoon onset in South Asia and Tibetan Plateau thermal forcing

Die Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of thermal forcing over the Tibetan Plateau on the onset of the summer monsoon in the Arabian Sea and India. The results show that the diabatic heating over the Tibetan Plateau is negatively correlated with the onset date of the summer monsoon, and it can induce the formation of the South Asian High, leading to an earlier onset of the monsoon.

Roles of synoptic-scale waves and intraseasonal oscillations in the onset of the South China Sea summer monsoon

Jingliang Huangfu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the maintenance period of the South China Sea summer monsoon onset, specifically looking at the roles of synoptic-scale waves compared to intraseasonal oscillations. It is found that synoptic-scale processes play a critical role in the onset of the monsoon, with horizontal wind anomalies and low-pressure systems contributing to maintaining the monsoon onset. Eddy kinetic energy conversion from synoptic-scale waves is shown to be more significant than the intraseasonal oscillations during this maintenance stage.

Close Linkage of the South China Sea Summer Monsoon Onset and Extreme Rainfall in May over Southeast Asia: Role of the Synoptic-Scale Systems

Peng Hu et al.

Summary: Based on multiple datasets and methods, this study reveals a close relation between the South China Sea summer monsoon onset and the occurrence frequency of extreme rainfall over Southeast Asia in May. The study suggests that the amplitude of tropical synoptic-scale systems plays an important role in this linkage. An early onset of the South China Sea summer monsoon is accompanied by anomalous cyclonic circulation and increased moisture, leading to the development of vigorous synoptic-scale systems and an increase in extreme rainfall over Southeast Asia.

The Leading Mode and Factors for Coherent Variations among the Subsystems of Tropical Asian Summer Monsoon Onset

Peng Hu et al.

Summary: Previous studies mainly focused on individual subsystems of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) onset. This study investigates the dominant onset mode of the entire tropical ASM region by analyzing rainfall and wind patterns. The results reveal coherent features and significant interannual and interdecadal changes in the synchronized variation of monsoon onset. The study also identifies factors such as the 30-80-day oscillation, El Nino, and Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) that modulate the ASM onset.

Multi-scale climate variations and mechanisms of the onset and withdrawal of the South China Sea summer monsoon

Wen Chen et al.

Summary: The onset of the South China Sea summer monsoon (SCSSM) is important for understanding climate anomalies in East and Southeast Asia. This paper reviews the climate variations and mechanisms of the SCSSM onset, with a focus on the past five years. El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and intraseasonal oscillations play important roles in controlling the SCSSM onset, and there are close interactions between the SCSSM onset and synoptic-scale systems like tropical cyclones.

Interdecadal Change in the Relationship Between the Bay of Bengal Summer Monsoon and South China Sea Summer Monsoon Onset

Zhenjie Zeng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of Indian Ocean warming on the relationship between the Bay of Bengal Monsoon (BOBSM) and South China Sea Monsoon (SCSSM). The study found that the interdecadal changes in the strength and meridional movement of the South Asian High influenced the relationship between the monsoons, while Indian Ocean basin warming served as a primary factor in inducing a closer relationship between the BOBSM and SCSSM. The coupling of upper and lower troposphere circulation patterns played a key role in synchronously modulating the interannual variations of the monsoons and contributing to a closer relationship between the BOBSM and SCSSM in the later period.

Effects of Suppressed Transient Eddies by the Tibetan Plateau on the East Asian Summer Monsoon

Qiaoling Ren et al.

Summary: This study finds that the persistent suppression of transient eddies by the Tibetan Plateau weakens the East Asian westerly jet stream, leading to changes in precipitation patterns over East Asia, particularly in early summer. This suppression causes a southward shift of the East Asian rain belt, promoting increased rainfall in the southern region.
