The backward nonlinear local Lyapunov exponent and its application to quantifying the local predictability of extreme high-temperature events

Xuan Li et al.

Summary: The BNLLE method was used to quantify the local predictability limits of two extreme high-temperature events in Europe during the summer of 2019. Results showed that error dynamics were dependent on geographical location and exhibited regional differences with forecast time.

Properties and Drivers of Marine Heat Waves in the Northern South China Sea

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the properties and heat budget of marine heat waves on the northern South China Sea continental shelf, finding that heat waves occur mainly along the coast with the main heat source being the sea surface net heat flux. Oceanic processes are dominated by the advection of mean temperature by the anomalous horizontal velocity. Cross-slope water exchanges play a key role in the formation and decay of heat waves.

The area prediction of western North Pacific Subtropical High in summer based on Gaussian Naive Bayes

Deqian Li et al.

Summary: This study establishes a Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB) model for the classification prediction of the western North Pacific Subtropical High (WNPSH) area. The GNB shows stronger prediction ability compared to tree models in terms of accuracy scores and balanced accuracy scores. It can maintain high accuracy and balanced accuracy above 0.77 and 0.75 respectively, and perform well in predicting anomalous categories. Moreover, the GNB is less dependent on the data sample size and can reduce the limitation of abrupt interdecadal changes in climate on the available data sample size to some extent. This research reveals the potential of GNB for predicting the summer WNPSH area and has significant reference value for other short-term climate prediction problems.

A New Technique to Quantify the Local Predictability of Extreme Events: The Backward Nonlinear Local Lyapunov Exponent Method

Xuan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the local predictability of extreme weather events using the Lorenz model and introduces a new method to quantitatively estimate the local predictability limits. The results show that the predictability of extreme events is not solely determined by their magnitude, but is also influenced by the dynamical flow, initial error size, and structure of an attractor.

Decreasing predictability as a precursor indicator for abrupt climate change

Wenping He et al.

Summary: The study introduces the Nonlinear Local Lyapunov Exponent (NLLE) as a new early warning signal for abrupt climate changes, demonstrating through simulations and a case study that NLLE can predict abrupt climate changes in advance, with larger NLLE indicating lower predictability.

Optimally growing initial errors of El Nino events in the CESM

Hui Xu et al.

Summary: Different types of optimally growing initial errors (OGEs) for El Nino events were identified in the CESM, leading to various intensities and diversities of impacts. These errors can cause mispredictions of El Nino events, resulting in them being incorrectly forecasted as neutral states or La Nina events.

Current and projected regional economic impacts of heatwaves in Europe

David Garcia-Leon et al.

Summary: Research shows that Europe is facing significant economic losses due to reduced labor productivity caused by heatwaves. Future projections suggest that if no action is taken, these impacts could increase by almost five times by 2060.

A new view of heat wave dynamics and predictability over the eastern Mediterranean

Assaf Hochman et al.

Summary: Skilled forecasts of extreme weather events are of great socioeconomic importance. This study compares two approaches to diagnose predictability of extreme weather: dynamical systems theory and numerical ensemble weather forecasts. Findings indicate that heat waves in the eastern Mediterranean exhibit differences in intrinsic predictability and practical predictability, with the dynamical systems approach providing valuable insights into the dynamics and predictability of these events.
