LAMMPS-a flexible simulation tool for particle-based materials modeling at the atomic, meso, and continuum scales

Aidan P. Thompson et al.

Summary: LAMMPS, a classical molecular dynamics simulator released as an open source code in 2004, has gained popularity for its wide variety of particle interaction models, platform compatibility, and user control over simulation details. With contributions from numerous developers, it has grown from 50,000 lines of code to a million today, showcasing new capabilities like dynamic load balancing and quantum-accuracy machine learning interatomic potentials.

Evaluation of subsurface transport processes of delayed gas signatures applicable to underground nuclear explosions

Charles R. Carrigan et al.

Summary: Radioactive gas signatures from underground nuclear explosions (UNEs) result from gas-migration processes occurring in the subsurface. This study evaluates the relative importance of driving and retarding processes in the subsurface transport of gases from a UNE. The simulations show that over-pressuring of the detonation cavity coupled with barometric pumping amplified the tracer-gas reaching the surface. The effect of gas diffusion was found to have a larger impact on upward transport compared to tracer-gas sorption and dissolution.

Gas diffusion through variably-water-saturated zeolitic tuff: Implications for transport following a subsurface nuclear event

Chelsea W. Neil et al.

Summary: The transport of noble gases through geologic media is crucial in distinguishing between civilian nuclear facilities and underground nuclear explosions. This study focuses on the impact of water saturation on xenon transport time, compared to krypton and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). It is found that water greatly affects xenon transport due to its preferential adsorption in zeolitic tuff.

Influences of channel morphology and Bronsted acidity on ETS-10, ZSM-5, and SSZ-13 for xenon and krypton separation

Yixuan Yu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the effects of channel morphology and Bronsted acidity on noble gas separation using three different zeolites. ZSM-5 has been found to have better selectivity for separating Xe and Kr, making it an efficient method for capturing Xe from used radioactive gas and cryogenic air.

Prediction of CO2 and H2 solubility, diffusion, and permeability in MFI zeolite by molecular dynamics simulation

Ardeshir Hassanzadeh et al.

Summary: The study found that in MFI zeolite, the adsorption of CO2 and H-2 increases with increasing pressure and decreasing temperature. The diffusion coefficient of hydrogen is much higher than that of carbon dioxide, and temperature has a direct impact on the diffusion coefficient of both gases. The diffusion coefficient of hydrogen in the gas mixture is lower while that of carbon dioxide in pure state is lower.

Clinoptilolite/electrolyte interface probed by a classical molecular dynamics simulations and batch adsorption experiments

Ondrej Kroutil et al.

Summary: Classical molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the clinoptilolite/electrolyte interface at an atomistic resolution, describing the structural properties of water molecules, sodium, and ammonium cations in detail. Umbrella sampling simulations were performed to calculate the free energies of adsorption of Na+ and NH4+ cations, showing qualitative agreement with experimental results but discussing the quantitative discrepancies.

Enabling large-scale hydrogen storage in porous media - the scientific challenges

Niklas Heinemann et al.

Summary: This article identifies the scientific challenges of large-scale underground hydrogen storage in porous media, highlighting the safety and economic impacts triggered by poorly understood key processes. Despite the vast opportunities provided by UHSP, its maturity is considered low, requiring multidisciplinary research to achieve safe, efficient and much-needed large-scale commercial deployment.
