Comparative Effectiveness and Safety of Direct Oral Anticoagulants and Warfarin in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Chronic Liver Disease: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Oluwadolapo D. Lawal et al.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness and safety of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) with warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and chronic liver disease. The results showed that DOACs as a class were associated with lower risks of hospitalization for ischemic stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding compared to warfarin. However, the outcomes varied between different DOACs and in head-to-head comparisons with warfarin.

Thromboembolism and bleeding in patients with atrial fibrillation and liver disease- A nationwide register-based cohort study Thromboembolism and bleeding in liver disease

Kamilla Steensig et al.

Summary: This study examined the risks of thromboembolism and bleeding in patients with liver disease and atrial fibrillation/flutter who used or did not use oral anticoagulation. The results showed that oral anticoagulant initiation was associated with a reduced thromboembolism risk in patients with liver disease and high CHA2DS2-VASc-score.

Impact of liver disease on oral anticoagulant prescription and major adverse events in patients with atrial fibrillation: analysis from a population-based cohort study

Marco Proietti et al.

Summary: Patients with atrial fibrillation and concomitant liver disease have increased risks of stroke, major bleeding, and all-cause death. However, the use of oral anticoagulant drugs can significantly reduce these risks and provide a positive benefit-risk ratio.
