Selectively Controlled Ferromagnets by Electric Fields in van der Waals Ferromagnetic Heterojunctions

Zi-Ao Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates electrically tunable charge transfer in Fe3GeTe2/Cr2Ge2Te6/Fe3GeTe2 all-magnetic van der Waals heterostructures. The directional charge transfer from metallic Fe3GeTe2 to semiconducting Cr2Ge2Te6 remarkably modifies the magnetic anisotropy energy of Fe3GeTe2, leading to a dramatically suppressed coercivity. The electrically selective control of magnetism shown here could inspire the development of spintronic devices based on van der Waals magnets.

Realization of Zero-Field Skyrmions in a Magnetic Tunnel Junction

Bin He et al.

Summary: Magnetic skyrmions, as topologically protected noncollinear spin textures, are potential information carriers in next-generation spintronic devices due to their small size and low current density requirements. This study develops a zero-field exchange-biased skyrmion material and successfully integrates it into a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) device by inserting an iridium (Ir) layer to enhance exchange bias and thermal stability. The smallest zero-field skyrmions achieved a size of 100 nm at room temperature, and their integration into a perpendicularly magnetized MTJ represents a significant step towards the development of skyrmion-based spintronic devices.

Tunable spin injection and detection across a van der Waals interface

Keun-Hong Min et al.

Summary: The authors investigate the tunnelling magnetoresistance in Fe3GeTe2/hBN(WSe2)/Fe3GeTe2 magnetic tunnel junctions and report strong variations including polarization reversals with bias. Using van der Waals heterostructures with two-dimensional magnets, they demonstrate electrically tunable spin injection and detection, as well as modulated and reversed net spin polarization of the injected carriers, leading to changes in tunnelling magnetoresistance. The authors attribute the spin polarization reversals to contributions from high-energy localized spin states in the metallic ferromagnet, which is inaccessible in conventional magnetic junctions.

Spin filtering effect in all-van der Waals heterostructures with WSe2 barriers

Yuanhui Zheng et al.

Summary: Utilizing van der Waals heterostructures with WSe2 barriers has demonstrated the spin-filtering effect, allowing for manipulation of magnetoresistance through changing the thickness of WSe2. A spin-filtering model based on Delta-symmetry electrons tunneling explains the transition from negative to positive MR signal. These findings highlight the potential of TMDC materials in controlling spin currents in 2D spintronic devices.

Antisymmetric magnetoresistance in Fe3GeTe2 nanodevices of inhomogeneous thickness

Wei Niu et al.

Summary: This study explores the rarely observed antisymmetric magnetoresistance in thickness-inhomogeneous nanodevices compared to the symmetric magnetoresistance in thickness-uniform samples. Variations in thickness lead to distinct coercive fields in different regions, generating eddy currents near the thickness boundary during magnetic switching and causing unexpected antisymmetry in longitudinal resistance. This work provides insights and potential device applications in thickness-variation 2D ferromagnetic materials that have been overlooked in previous research.
