A review of structures and physical properties of rare earth chalcophosphates

Zi-Xia Chen et al.

Summary: Metal chalcophosphates exhibit chemical and structural diversity due to the different ways phosphorus-sulfur/selenium anionic groups connect. Rare earth metals, known for their unique magneto-optical properties, have attracted great interest and have been widely studied. Recent research progress on rare earth chalcophosphates, focusing on their structures and physical properties, is summarized in this review. It is believed that rare earth chalcophosphates have the potential to be multifunctional materials, and this summary aims to provide insights for the development of new rare earth chalcophosphates.

Recent Development of Non-π-Conjugated Deep Ultraviolet Nonlinear Optical Materials

Weiqi Huang et al.

Summary: This article introduces the research progress of deep-UV non-linear optical (NLO) materials, including the properties and structure relationship of p-conjugated and non-pi-conjugated deep-UV NLO crystals, as well as new functional groups. It is found that non-pi-conjugated deep-UV NLO materials are divided into six categories, which are important for balancing performance.

Nonpolar Na10Cd(NO3)4(SO3S)4 Exhibits a Large Second-Harmonic Generation

Youchao Liu et al.

Summary: Conventional wisdom suggests that nonpolar structures do not favor strong second-harmonic generation responses. However, we report a nonpolar thiosulfate with a stronger SHG response than polar sulfates. This enhancement is mainly attributed to the flexibility of the S=S bond.

Local Polarity-Induced Assembly of Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Materials

Yanqiang Li et al.

Summary: Second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have significant applications in various fields, and the rational assembly of high-performance second-order NLO materials remains a challenge. In this study, a local polarity-induced assembly strategy is proposed, which involves using specific cations, self-condensation of weakly polarizable units, and introduction of strongly polarizable units to facilitate the assembly of second-order NLO materials. Using this strategy, a variety of excellent second-order NLO materials have been successfully assembled, expanding the sources of such materials.

Pushing KTiOPO4-like Nonlinear Optical Sulfates into the Deep-Ultraviolet Spectral Region

Yang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study successfully designed and synthesized two new deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical crystals by using a bandgap-directed computer-aided material design approach. The transmittance spectrum of one of the crystals, KZnSO4F, showed a significant blue-shifted transparency window to <190 nm, which was explained by first-principles calculations. This work pushes the transparency windows of KTP-like NLO sulfates into the deep-UV spectral region for the first time and will pave a prospective way to the accurate design and synthesis of new deep-UV NLO materials.

A General Principle for DUV NLO Materials: π-Conjugated Confinement Enlarges Band Gap

Lin Xiong et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a general principle, pi-conjugated confinement, to partially decouple the interunit pi-conjugated interactions by separating non-pi-conjugated units, aiming to enlarge the band gap and gain a large optical anisotropy. This principle suggests that carbonophosphates could be a promising new DUV candidate system.

Summary: The study identifies the fluorooxosulfate group as a new functional module for enhancing birefringence, with a birefringence magnitude 4.8-15.5 times higher than sulfates with the same metal cations. Experimental measurements confirm the birefringence enhancement of fluorooxosulfates, while theoretical studies reveal the role of fluorine in inducing anisotropic electronic distribution within the fluorooxo-tetrahedral group.
