Precisely Tailoring Nitrogen Defects in Carbon Nitride for Efficient Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Qiqi Zhang et al.

Summary: Precisely tailoring the nitrogen defects is a promising approach for enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency of C3N4. In this study, two-coordinated-N vacancies are selectively introduced into the C3N4 framework through a facile Cl- modification method, and the concentration of defects can be easily controlled by varying the usage of Cl- during thermal polymerization. The optimal defective C3N4 exhibits superior hydrogen and oxygen evolution rates and the highest apparent quantum efficiency among reported single-component C3N4 photocatalysts for overall water splitting. The Cl- modification facilitates the introduction of two-coordinated-N vacancies and promotes charge carrier separation efficiency, leading to greatly enhanced photocatalytic efficiency.

Selective CH4 reform to methanol through partial oxidation over Bi2O3 at room temperature and pressure

Jessica A. de Oliveira et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors propose that the efficient partial photooxidation of methane to methanol depends on specific band edge positions in photocatalysts. They demonstrate this hypothesis using Bi2O3 as a semiconductor and show that it exhibits favorable valence band properties for .OH production and unfavorable conduction band properties for O-2.-, which is crucial for maintaining an available O-2 level for .CH3 capture and methanol formation. Experimental results reveal that Bi2O3 is capable of selectively converting methane to methanol under visible light at room temperature and pressure, with productivity reaching approximately 3771 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) and around 65% selectivity, thus avoiding over-oxidation to CO2. Isotope labeling experiments and ESR measurements confirm methane as the carbon source for methanol generation and the presence of .CH3 and .OH. Bi2O3 also demonstrates good stability after multiple cycles, maintaining high and selective methanol production. These findings provide important insights into critical properties of photocatalysts for the partial photooxidation of methane to methanol.

Intermediate stabilization for tuning photocatalytic selective oxidation of CH4 to CH3OH over Co3O4/ZnO

Zhen Xiao et al.

Summary: Artificial photocatalysis is a promising method for selective conversion of CH4 to CH3OH, but the over-oxidization by active oxygen radicals hinders its efficiency. In this study, a strategy of transferring key intermediates for stability was proposed. A Co3O4/ZnO composite photocatalyst effectively converted CH4 to CH3OH under simulated sunlight irradiation, while pure ZnO only over-oxidized CH4 into CO2.
