Comparison of two- and three-dimensional endoscopic visualization for fetal myelomeningocele repair: a pilot study using a fetoscopic surgical simulator

Smruti K. Patel et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the utility of 3D endoscopy versus 2D endoscopy for fetal myelomeningocele repair using a low-fidelity fetoscopic simulator. Results showed that although there was no statistically significant difference in performance time between 3D and 2D visualization, participants generally preferred 3D over 2D and experts showed faster completion times in certain tasks with both modalities. The findings suggest that 3D endoscopes could potentially improve visualization and performance in complex fetoscopic procedures, supporting their future clinical implementation in fetal surgery and surgical training.

Validation of a high-fidelity training model for fetoscopic spina bifida surgery

Luc Joyeux et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated a high-fidelity training model for fetoscopic spina bifida repair, involving simulated procedures on adult rabbits. The technical performance of laparoscopic fetal surgeons was evaluated using competency analysis, confirming differences between novices and experts. Construct and criterion validity were established, with novices needing 33 consecutive procedures to reach competency, similar to clinical practice. Expert fetal surgeons worldwide confirmed the realism and usefulness of the model.

Implementation Process and Evolution of a Laparotomy-Assisted 2-Port Fetoscopic Spina Bifida Closure Program

Jena L. Miller et al.

Summary: The study described the development, evolution, and feasibility of laparotomy-assisted 2-port fetoscopic technique for prenatal closure of fetal spina bifida in a newly established program. It also showed that the technique provided benefits for the fetus while minimizing maternal morbidities.
