Association of total pre-existing comorbidities with stroke risk: a large-scale community-based cohort study from China

Summary: The study found that hypertension, congenital heart disease, previous stroke, and diabetes are four pre-existing comorbidities that are independently and positively associated with the risk for all types of stroke. Participants with 1 or more pre-existing comorbidities had nearly 2 and nearly 3 times higher risk of stroke, respectively, compared to those without pre-existing conditions.

Summary: The Department of Health and Human Services issued the Final Rule in 1998 as guidance for organ transplantation and allocation policies, leading to two major changes in the lung allocation system. The first change introduced the lung allocation score (LAS) as the primary determinant for donor lung allocation. Although successful in prioritizing the sickest candidates, the LAS model did not address geographic disparities in lung supply and demand, leading to inequities in waiting list survival based on a patient's location.

Predictors of LVT include anterior MI, involvement of LV apex, LV akinesis or dyskinesis, reduced LVEF, severe diastolic dysfunction, and large infarct size. Anticoagulant therapy for at least 3 months can reduce the risk of LVT-related events.
