From the problem to the solution: Chitosan valorization cycle

Irene Junceda-Mena et al.

Summary: The issue of fisheries waste has been increasing globally due to various factors. The utilization of these waste materials as raw materials has been proven to be effective in addressing the crisis faced by the oceans and improving marine resource management. However, the implementation of valorization strategies at the industrial level has been slow, particularly in the case of chitosan extracted from shellfish waste. To overcome this, a sustainable and circular economy approach should be adopted for chitosan valorization.

N,N-dimethyl chitosan oligosaccharide (DMCOS) promotes antifungal activity by causing mitochondrial damage

Peng Dong et al.

Summary: By modifying chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) with the Eschweiler-Clarke reaction, a derivative called DMCOS was synthesized. Analysis revealed that DMCOS had converted primary amines into tertiary amines after methylation. DMCOS showed less thermal stability than COS, but exhibited stronger antimicrobial activity against bacterial and yeast strains, while also displaying lower antioxidant activity and causing mitochondrial damage in C. albicans cells.
