A New Family of Renewable Thermosets: Kraft Lignin Poly-adipates

Davide Di Francesco et al.

Summary: In this study, a two-step procedure was developed to produce a thermoset material from sustainable sub-components. The cross-linking between KL lignin and AdA was activated using an acetylating agent, resulting in the formation of a cross-linking mixture. The esterification reactions were confirmed by spectroscopy, and the material transformed into a thermoset through heating.

A review on lignin antioxidants: Their sources, isolations, antioxidant activities and various applications

Xinyu Lu et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the research progress on lignin antioxidants extracted from biomass resources, methods to improve their antioxidant activity, and their applications. Phenolic content is considered as the most important factor affecting lignin antioxidant activity, and studies have focused on pretreatments and post-processing methods to enhance their activity. Lignin is regarded as a potential natural antioxidant alternative and has the potential for application as an inexpensive antioxidant additive.

Evolution of kraft lignin during hydrothermal treatment under different reaction conditions

Shijie Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the evolution of kraft lignin during hydrothermal treatment and the impact of reaction conditions on its structure. The results showed that high temperature can break the bonds and groups in lignin, while reaction pressure has minimal influence on lignin structure.

Cellulose-lignin composite fibres as precursors for carbon fibres. Part 1-Manufacturing and properties of precursor fibres

Mikaela Trogen et al.

Summary: Cellulose-lignin composite fibres were successfully spun from ionic liquid solutions with lignin concentrations of up to 50%. Comparing beech and spruce lignin, the higher stability and carbon content of spruce lignin resulted in higher carbon fiber yield. These composite fibres show great potential as precursors for carbon fiber production.

Guidelines for performing lignin-first biorefining

Mahdi M. Abu-Omar et al.

Summary: The valorisation of lignin is crucial for the economic viability of the lignocellulosic biorefining industry. The lignin-first biorefining approach, which considers lignin valorisation in the design phase, has been shown to make the fullest use of lignocellulose. Despite the diverse approaches to reporting and analyzing results from lignin-first methods, we propose guidelines for analyzing critical data in order to facilitate direct comparisons between studies.
