Nitrogen and sulfamethoxazole removal in a partially saturated vertical flow constructed wetland treating synthetic mariculture wastewater

Jinjin Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal of nitrogen and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and the microbial communities in a partially saturated vertical flow constructed wetland (PS-VFCW) fed with synthetic mariculture wastewater operated at different saturated zone depths (SZDs). The results showed that SZD had a significant impact on the removal efficiency, with different depths showing variation in nitrification and denitrification performance. Various important microbial communities were found in the unsaturated zone, which played a key role in the removal of organics, nitrogen, and SMX.

Toxic effects and molecular mechanisms of sulfamethoxazole on Scenedesmus obliquus

Dongmei Xu et al.

Summary: The antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) has been found to have biotoxic effects on Scenedesmus obliquus, an aquatic organism. Exposure to SMX promotes gene expression, leading to changes in algal cell ultrastructure. These changes include blurred cell walls, damaged chloroplast structure, and increased number and volume of mitochondria per cell. The effects of SMX on gene expression are related to inhibition of cell growth, decrease in chlorophyll content, increase in cell membrane permeability, production of reactive oxygen species, increased lipid peroxidation, and higher activities of antioxidant enzymes. The abnormal expression of non-coding RNAs may be an important mechanism underlying the carcinogenic effects of SMX.

Adsorption of microplastics on aquifer media: Effects of the action time, initial concentration, ionic strength, ionic types and dissolved organic matter

Shuo Li et al.

Summary: The adsorption of microplastics on aquifer media is influenced by various factors, including the properties of the microplastics themselves and the environment. The adsorption process can be divided into three stages and follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. After adsorption, microplastics can exist individually or aggregate on the media. Surface analysis reveals the presence of elemental carbon and varying degrees of microplastic adsorption on the media. Infrared spectroscopy results show an increase in absorption peaks, mainly attributed to the vibrations of aromatic hydrocarbons and benzene ring skeleton. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of microplastics increases linearly with the initial concentration and follows the Freundlich model. The adsorption process is also affected by different cations and anions, with higher ionic strength of NH4+ enhancing the adsorption capacity and Ca2+ promoting adsorption through ternary complex formation. Increased concentrations of SO(4)(2-) and HCO3- gradually inhibit adsorption.

Occurrence and ecotoxicity of sulfonamides in the aquatic environment: A review

Weiyan Duan et al.

Summary: Rapid population growth and increasing demand for animal protein food have led to a continuous increase in global utilization of antibiotic, specifically sulfonamides (SAs), which are found to be ubiquitous in aquatic environments and pose a potential ecological risk. Research on different trophic level organisms shows that algae are the most susceptible to selected sulfonamide antibiotics, and some of these antibiotics pose a great risk to the aquatic system.

Behaviour of 27 selected emerging contaminants in vertical flow constructed wetlands as post-treatment for municipal wastewater

Silvia Venditti et al.

Summary: The study investigated the efficiency of different substrates in removing emerging contaminants from wastewater using Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands (VFCWs). The laboratory investigation showed that VFCWs could provide excellent effluent quality, with overall removal efficiencies exceeding 90% in most cases. Substrate type played a role in the removal of compounds with medium elimination. Under real conditions, VFCWs with 15% activated biochar mixed with sand were effective in removing 18 emerging contaminants and meeting national discharge standards for 4 selected compounds.

Adsorption of sulfamethoxazole via biochar: The key role of characteristic components derived from different growth stage of microalgae

Xuefei Tan et al.

Summary: Converting microalgal biomass into biochar is a popular approach for treating organic pollutants. This study investigates the relationship between adsorption efficiency and microalgal composition. The results show that microalgal biochar collected during the mid-log phase of growth exhibits the best adsorption capacity. This is attributed to the higher decomposition of microalgal cellular proteins and the presence of larger surface area, pore volume, and functional groups.

Simultaneous removal of nitrogen and dimethyl phthalate from low-carbon wastewaters by using intermittently-aerated constructed wetlands

Xin Zhao et al.

Summary: Intermittently-aerated subsurface flow constructed wetlands showed efficient removal of DMP, COD, and NH4+-N under different influent DMP concentrations, with a good fitting relationship between TN removal and DMP reduction. The decomposition of DMP in CWs generated smaller molecular fractions and intermediates that could potentially serve as carbon sources for denitrification processes. These findings contribute to a better understanding of DMP removal mechanisms and offer guidance for practical applications of CWs in treating wastewater contaminated with phthalates.
