Bisphenol A damages testicular junctional proteins transgenerationally in mice

Elikanah Olusayo Adegoke et al.

Summary: This study finds that BPA has a downregulating effect on testicular junctional proteins, which is partly mediated by binding with estrogen receptors and regulation of signaling pathways. It leads to abnormal testicular tissue and impaired sperm function. These effects can be transmitted to the next generation, but are mostly alleviated in the third generation through DNA methylation.

Impacts of endocrine disrupting chemicals on reproduction in wildlife and humans

V. L. Marlatt et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the current knowledge of the impacts of EDCs on reproductive success in wildlife and humans, with a focus on retrospective assessment and laboratory-based experiments. The evidence suggests that anthropogenic chemicals negatively impact reproduction by altering endocrine system function, particularly in aquatic species. Similar effects are observed in mammalian wildlife and humans in epidemiological studies. Further research is needed on the implications of chemical exposures during development and the potential for long-term reproductive effects. Field-based observations and long-term population level studies are key to addressing knowledge gaps.

Hepatic consequences of a mixture of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in male mice

Md Saidur Rahman et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of exposure to mixtures containing bisphenol A and seven phthalates on liver functions and metabolic homeostasis. The results showed that exposure to EDCs at doses exceeding the human daily exposure limit had detrimental impacts on overall liver function, leading to metabolic abnormalities, steatohepatitis, and hepatic fibrosis. These findings have significant relevance for public health.

The Role of Kisspeptin in the Control of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Axis and Reproduction

Qinying Xie et al.

Summary: The discovery of kisspeptin as a critical central regulatory factor in human reproduction has provided a novel understanding of neuroendocrine regulation. Kisspeptin activates the signaling pathway by binding to its receptor, promoting GnRH secretion and regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. It plays a key role in puberty initiation, female follicle development, oocyte maturation, and male reproduction. Mutations or disorders in the kisspeptin/KISS1R system can lead to clinical symptoms. Understanding the influence of kisspeptin on the reproductive axis will aid in its future application in disease diagnosis and treatment.

Exposure to phthalates from personal care products: Urinary levels and predictors of exposure

Alexandra Pagoni et al.

Summary: Phthalates are widely used chemicals in everyday consumer products and their exposure through the use of personal care products can lead to various health effects. Time of sampling, frequency of use, race, and age are critical factors that influence phthalate concentrations. Specific personal care products, such as perfumes and fragrance-containing products, show significant associations with phthalate levels.

Bisphenol A and its analogues in outdoor and indoor air: Properties, sources and global levels

Tijana Vasiljevic et al.

Summary: BPA and its analogues are widely used in plastic synthesis, potentially disrupting the hormonal structure of living organisms. Reports on BPA levels in air are limited, mainly due to anthropogenic activities. China reported the highest outdoor air levels of BPA near a low-tech e-waste recycling site, and indoor dust also revealed bisphenol analogues used in BPA-free products.

Summary: Arsenic exposure through contaminated drinking water is a global health issue affecting over 200 million people worldwide, leading to various cancers. Research has shifted focus from genetic mutations to epigenetics, metabolism, and endoplasmic reticulum stress in cancer development. Arsenic induces cellular stress through oxidative damage, epigenetic changes, and impairment of DNA repair systems, highlighting the importance of understanding the role of ER stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and autophagy in cancer prevention and treatment.

Effects of phthalates on the functions and fertility of mouse spermatozoa

Shehreen Amjad et al.

Summary: In this study, exposure to a phthalate mixture resulted in decreased sperm motility and hyperactivity, compromised sperm ability to generate ATP, induced abnormal capacitation and acrosome reaction, upregulated protein tyrosine phosphorylation via a protein kinase-A-dependent pathway, and significantly affected fertilization and early embryonic development. The findings suggest that the phthalate mixtures adversely affected sperm processes and ultimately led to poor fertilization rates and repressed embryonic development, with the lowest observed adverse effect dose being <1 µg/mL in vitro.
